Quad 989 Hiss |
|
|
One of my Quad 989 speakers has started to hiss gently. Sounds like tape
hiss in days of old. I live in Nova Scotia, the dealer is in Montreal
and the importer in Ontario. It's traumatic to box one of these guys up
and ship it back (I had to do it once for a blown panel). Is there any
point in trying a power line conditioner first?

If the problem is only one speaker and they both run on the same line,
the problem is not in the line. Thus, adding a PLC won't make any
improvement. Have you heard the hiss with no input connection? It
might otherwise be the amp.

I doubt it. The usual reason for a Quad ESL hissing it
something amiss with a panel or on the HT. If the air is
very damp (happens here in Cambridge, but maybe not in Nova
Scotia), or if conductive dirt has accumulated on some part
that is at 5kV (or whatever it is these days), you get a
hiss from the air. If you are very brave (and take
precautions to make sure it's all properly discharged first)
it might be worth doing a bit of spring cleaning on the
innards, but otherwise I suspect you'll have to ship it
back.

I should have said that, it does occur just the same even if no amp is
connected. I was wondering if having both speakers on the same line
might be part of the problem. I did try plugging it in to a socket
across the room, but it makes no difference (I'm just not sure if these
sockets are on different lines).

Yeah but if one hisses and the other doesn't under the same
conditions, a power conditioner is not the cure.

If you live in a very humid region, that could be the problem and it
would not necessarily occur in both speakers. If this is the case it
would disappear and reappear as humidity varies. Quad recommends that
the room for their 'stats be airconditioned when humidity is a problem.
Another and potentially more costly source of your problem could be if
the glue holding the stator to the frame of a panel begins to fail.
This causes the stator to be able to vibrate relative to the membrane
in the panel - upshot is the small hiss you hear. With your amp off but
the stats energized, put your ear up close to the speaker surface and
try to locate the area where the noise seems focused. That would
indicate the faulty panel. Now for the bad news.
Self repair is not for the faint of heart and not a good idea. I have
done so in the past with esl63 panels, but it takes nerves of steel
(not my strongest asset) and a good epoxy glue applied with sublime
care. My advice is identify the panel and move to step 2.
Step 2. Short version: Undress the Quad, to expose the panels. (be sure
there is no power to the speaker from either amp or wall socket).
Review what you need to do to unsolder connecting wires and remove the
panel. Replace the panel with a new one and retrace your steps.
The above is only to give you an idea of what is involved if you want
to avoid shipping the whole speaker to be repaired. When you own Quads
if helps to be handy with a soldering iron.
Finally, my recommendation: email qsandd@aol.com and ask Randy for
assistance.
Tell him Ed from the Bahamas sent you!

Hi!
Would it be possible to do anything with an old fashion vacuumcleaner
used on the reverse side, meaning to blow away the dust?
Perhaps it keeps you form getting 5 - 10 kV blow.

My mistake, that email address should be QSandD@aol.com.
