Adobe Audition - any users? |
|
|
I'm thinking about getting Adobe Audition for a small home/studio
project I'm starting, and I'm wondering, does anyone use this for
tracking, or is it better for post production, or does it really
matter? I'd like to use one thing for everything if possible -
tracking, editing, mixing (does it have automated mixing?) Also, can
you use an FX loop with it, like rack mount processor, is there a way
to implement it in the mix?

I use Audition (and its predecessor, Cool Edit Pro) for tracking
(frequently 6-8 simultaneous channels), editing, and mixing (and
for video "sweetening" also). It does everything I need to do.
I don't use any effects that aren't built-in to Audition, but I got

Adobe tends to do this:
finds a product it likes or needs for it's product array. buys the
company. changes the product a bit, and "brands" it with the adobe
logo. then creates some inter-operability with the new program with
its existing lineup. it's like an amoeba that gobbles up things in its
path IMHO. Dreamweaver really ran up the flagpole. no surprise Adobe
bought the company:
http://www.adobe.com/aboutadobe/invrelations/adobeandmacromedia.html
"Adobe. We don't create ideas. We buy them." (that would be my
marketing slogan for their company. i'm guessing they would pass on
that ad campaign).
Audition is what was formerly Cool Edit Pro
(http://videosystems.com/mag/video_edit_tools_adobe/index.html). I
think it is lame and I think Cool Edit pro was lame. I think the
interface stinks and the feature set stinks.
You can download a timed
demo:http://www.adobe.com/products/tryadobe/main.jsp#product=92 |

Well.. that's just smart business. Rather then let the Syntrilllium products
die in competition with all of the other editors, they gave it some life and
are making money from it. . I personally don't care where they get their
products or whether they spend R&D or pay someone who already has. makes no
diff. .. And when you look at the integration between AE, Premiere, PS,
Illustrator.. they've done quite well.
Not to mention that this is a normal and natural affair in the software
world. It is a good thing because it gives the little guys who are great
coders and create good software an opportunity to succeed. |

Thanks. I like most adobe products so far, especially the interface, so
I'm sure I'll like it. Does it do automated mixing? I supposed most any
software of that sort does now days. |

Audition....no automated mixing that I know of pretty basic. If you want |
to get into REAL editing software think SawStudio Protools something
like that. Audition will work with a control surface, with real faders
etc....but wait a while Version 2.0 is on the way soon. It'll be worth
the wait.

Adobe Audition is a good choice for a home studio. I am the former prod |
manager of a 20k audio editor and I believe Audition is a good $200 editor.
Its a fairly easy learning curve, there are plenty of people who know
it, and the changes after Cool Edit Pro are minimal. There's a good
active forum.
BUT v2.0 hits the street soon and unless there's a free upgrade, better
to wait.

Actually Adobe did very will with CEP, they didn't change it.
The interface is what it is.
V 2.0 is coming, if you are considering WAIT.

Version 2.0 will be released soon
Actually Syntrillium was doing well and WAS responsive because of their
size. (as former prod manager of a competitor) I can tell you for their
market no one was better at serving the niche (radio). Adobe just wanted
a good multitracker to go in the TV suite and they got it along with
about half a dozen employees. Bad news....its Adobe and slow to respond
and listen to consumers. I say this as both a former competitor and
vendor of Adobe products. Working a mutual interface with them met with
BIG nada (nothing, zip).

No-one outside Adobe knows this - I'm not sure where Dean is getting
his information from but it certainly isn't official.
Adobe also seem good about looking after existing customers - the last
Audition upgrade was very reasonably priced considering that some of
the new features were previously only available on systems costing
thousands of dollars.
Cheers
James.
I know that one of Adobe's VERY good customers will be getting copies |
within weeks. I have worked in digital editing since 97 (prod mgr).
