Best <$400 VHS player for capture of VHS atpes? |
|
|
I have a consumer level JVC S-VHS ET player (HR-3910U) but I have read that
it would be best to have a S-VHS with time based corrector feature to get
the best picture out of VHS tapes. The only VCR's like this that I have
seen under $500 are the professional level vcr's like the JVC HRS-9911
S-VHS VCR. I have boxes of old home videos that I want to capture and edit
for DVD.
Would it be a noticeable difference in video quality to use a VCR with S-VHS
and TBC for capturing standard VHS tapes?
Thanks,
Lou

I use a JVC HR-S6970 to transfer my VHS video tapes to DVD. The video is
quite stable and other than some bad tape drop outs, I haven't really needed
a TBC. It has an S-Video output which gives just that bit extra video
quality.

RRP is $349

Hmm... my vcr is S-VHS ET and I am not sure if it the output is as good as
a unit that is just S-VHS. Also the description for the JVC HR-S6970 at
BHphoto that you have said it has TBC (Time Base Corrector). Maybe it uses
it automatically or by default and that's why the video is so stable on your
VCR. I have been looking at the JVC HRS-9911 and it seems to have the same
features except the PAL and SECAM play but I don't need those and its a bit
cheaper.

Thanks for the reply. I will look into it more.

The TBC function on the 6970 is known as a 'video stabilizer' and is menu
selectable. I have found that it does not handle bad tape recordings very
well. It uses a simple frame store that results in A/V sync problems on the
captured digital video. I leave the video stabilizer out and just live with
the occasional drop out. The auto tracking feature does a good job of
stabilizing the video.
I think the 9911 is the way to go, it seems to have a better TBC than the
6970. The 9911 wasn't available here in Australia at the time I bought the
6970.
Good luck

Oh, that explains it. I found more info that also said the HRS-9911 is the
current best available.
