My car CD player has started to skip occasionally, even on smooth roads.
I hope the lens is dirty, cuz anything else probably isn't worth fixing.

Do any of the lens cleaning discs work? I tried two single brush
models, but neither helped. If I go to the trouble of taking the deck
out of the dash and cleaning it with a Q-tip, I might as well just
install a new one.

TIA.

never actually looked to see how a cd player spins its disks but my gf's PS2
had problems like this and eventually wouldn't even load disks. I took it
apart and was going to see if i could clean the lens, but it looked
spotless. Turns out that the pice that spins the cd was dusty as hell and it
couldn't get a good "grip" on the cd so it was spinning but the CD wasn't.
Alcohol and a q-tip and its as good as new. Of course you said you don't
wanna break it apart so i guess i am wasting my breath, lol.

You can buy a simple cd lens cleaner in just about anywhere, drug
stores, stereo stores, and even grocery stores. For the most part,
it's a CD with one tiny brush.

I've never had one intermittently skip due to dust on the lens. In
part because the dust doesn't tend to move around.

A more likely cause would be the drive system, whether rollers or
belt. They are usually rubber, and the rubber can dry out over time,
becoming stiff, or even brittle. Just like a belt in a car, they will
begin to slip as the rubber hardens and wears, and they develop a very
smooth layer of polished rubber which has no grip.

The use of alcohol on a cotton swab to clean the drive system is
common. Make sure the cleaner is oil free. Not all alcohol is. Oil
will also cause slippage of the drive system, which is a good reason
not to handle the parts with bare hands.

Sorry bud but q-tip with a little alcohol os the only way to really do
decent job. You might not have to remove it if you're patient and hav
a good flashlight

Perhaps the way I said it did not come across as intended. I did not

mean it was necessary to take it apart to clean. Only that if it was
taken apart, oils must not be allowed to remain on the parts. If it
came across that way, it was unintended, and I do thank you for taking
the time to point it out.

I've been cleaning audio (mono and stereo) equipment since the days of
the phonograph (I know, what's a phonograph.. LOL: 0 ). Even an old
gramophone, found in the local dump and restored. I've always
maintained my own equipment and been very particular about the care
and feeding of same.
