Series 2 VS Series 1 |
|
|
What is the main difference between a series 1 & 2 Tivo?? I'm talking
about the regular stand alone Tivo, not the DTV DVR.
I'm asking, because my Son has sort of peaked my interest into maybe
getting one. But unlike the DTV DVR he has, the regular ones appear to
only have one tuner. Now today, while at Circuit City, I was told by the
sales associate who got the info from his department manager, that the
series 2 has two tuners, making it possible to record one chan, while
viewing another live, and still be able to use the pause/resume Tivo
features on the live program. But upon going to the tivo.com site, I
read where you can record while viewing a live program, but not being
able to use the Tivo features on the live chan, since this can only be
accomblished by using a splitter. Another words the Circuit City PPL
were wrong, and that even the Series 2 has only the one tuner. So back
to my original question, what is the difference :-). Sorry if this is
too long. But I am really trying to understand this.

Only the DirecTivo's have dual tuners. A Stand Alone (SA) tivo has only
one tuner. It doesn't matter if it's series 1 or 2. The series 2's have
usb ports
and will (when upgraded through the TIVO services (if not out of the box)
allow
you to implement the TivoToGo and network your Tivo. You can use your
Tivo to watch recorded programs while recording live TV. Depending on your
setup and the number of cable boxes (if needed) you can watch one program
while recording another. In order to record two programs at the same time
with a SA tivo you will need two Tivos.

Series 1: can be operated without a subscription and easier to hack.
Series 2: has the latest nifty software features. (Folders,
multi-room viewing, TiVo-To-Go, remote scheduling, etc.)

The Circuit City people are misinformed.
Only the ones with DirecTV built in have two tuners.

Yes, you understand correctly. There is no difference between Series 1
and Series 2 as far as tuners are concerned; the standalone units
have only one. That includes the TiVo + DVD player and TiVo + DVD
recorder units; they are also "standalone" in the sense that they do not
have any DirecTV stuff inside.

The other difference is that only Series 1 units can function as a
digital recorder without the programming guide. I do that with my old
Series 1 because the modem has failed. What you can do with the
series 1 is setup a manual recording. On the now playing screen each
recording is listed by the channel, date and time it was recorded. No
program name.
I also use a Series 2 with sub. This unit won't work as a DVR without
it. |

<gasp!> imagine that, a retail sales droid being completely incorrect! And
backed up by a half-witted department manager, no less! Say it ain't so!
A standalone unit (unless it's HD) has only one recording tuner. You can
watch something that's already recorded or, if it's a straight-through
signal (as in, not digital cable or one that requires a box) you can watch
that while the box is busy recording something else. One tuner means only
one thing being recorded. That or only something played back from a past
recording can be paused/rwd/ffwd.
Run the numbers and decide if using DirecTV is worthwhile. I despise cable
companies so it wasn't a question for me. But having two tuners really does
work well. Having a tivo lets you break free from having to watch on
network schedules. Having two tuners means neither you or your spouse have
to 'decide' whose programs get that benefit. There's always going to be
that 'third' program that would be nice to record but since many programs
are rebroadcast either later that night or relatively soon you can still get
them. Dual tuners makes it just that much simpler to get what you want
without a lot of juggling. You could, I suppose, use two (or more)
standalone units to do it but you'd have to manually remember which unit is
recording which programs. There's no box-to-box schedule sharing and you're
still on the hook for the subscription fee. |

Re: Series 2 VS Series 1 |

Thanks all for clearing that up. Now I wonder how many unfortunate PPL,
bought that series 2, on the belief that they would be able to do what
can not be done>>LOL. Man, do I plan to chew some butt, when I head down
there again.
Now you have to wonder how long it will take the marketing and design
genuises to come up with say, "Series 3," with those two tunes, so that
you can use the pause/resume when interrupted feature when watching one
live program, while recording another. Guess I'll have to wait and see,
and continue using my two, one stacked on anoither VCRs till they do. I
happen to like my Comcast extended analog basic, since we have four TVs
in this house (All used one time or another). The fourth 13" could
probably go. But, we do not need a cable box for extended basic, here.
And I can not stomach the thought of all those additional receiver
charges for a dish.
Thanks again!! |

It's not "Series 3", the thing to look for is "CableCard TiVo".
http://www.google.com/search?q=%22CableCard+TiVo%22
But.. the announcement of a CableCard TiVo is probably the
most anticipated TIVO product announcement since the HD TIVO.
People are a little testy waiting ...
Some say middle of 2006, others say 2007.

And if the cable companies get their way it'll be never. It's not Tivo's
fault here. |

I'll buy one as soon as it's available. More the better if it also
records HD. |
