Can anyone recommend a disc labelling program that has good output options
for artwork. Most programs I have used are good at local printing, etc but
don't offer much in the way of exporting files. I want to be able to output
various formats when sending artwork for larger replication runs of CDs and
DVDs. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Partly dependent on what your printer wants or will be willing to work with

but Photoshop or Paint shop pro would be more up to saving in just about any
format. Photoshop or illustrator if you need spot colours. But first you
need to know what the printers will accept

Maybe you're working the wrong way round. Create your disk label in
any art program that outputs standard file types. If there isn't a
template for CD printing, make one. It's easy. If you have a
program designed for easy alignment of printable CDs or CD labels, I'm
sure it will accept a jpg or gif. So will the program the
duplicating house uses.

Laurence,
Thanks for that, I would like to use CorelDraw possibly to do this. Would
you know how I would ensure the correct placement of an image to ensure the
duplicating house print correctly i.e. to crop the image circular like the
labelling programs do on output as a file?

You should be asking the duplicating vendor that question.
They have likely done it thousands of times before and can
tell you exactly what they have found works best for them.
Alignment marks outside the visible area are typical, but
each vendor will have a preferred method they use.

They would normally have a bleed at outer and inner edges I think they

normally give details and some times templates in .eps

Create a graphic the right size and shape to fit a CD. If it doesn't
have a plain white background, make it oversize so there's border to
spare. The duplicating house will have no problem using that.

Like most printing companies, CD/DVD replication companies will accept a

wide range of file formats for artwork. Virtually all graphic formats, I
would suggest. GIF is no good (only 256 colours), but TIFF, BMP and JPG
(providing minimal compression is used) are OK. In practice most will
use a specialist company for producing the colour seps, which come, of
course, with the alignment marks which are discarded once the run is
set-up.

In terms of producing the artwork you can use most half-decent graphics
programs that allow you to produce a circular mask with a reverse mask
for the spindle cut-out. Photoshop CS is the graphic application which
springs to mind - though the cut-down Photoshop Elements will do the
job.

The purpose-built applications that I've experience of are

Surething from http://www.surething.com
Acoustica from http://www.acoustica.com

Both of the above vendors offer a large library of relatively
inexpensive artwork for use in their products.

Though it probably won't be of interest to you, Surething includes a
mining/database to extract/manage play-titles from playlists for music
CDs.
