Hey

I am a video newbie (so please be gentle). I have just connected my DV
Camera (JVC DVX4) to my computer via a firewire card. I want to start
capturing all my tapes, but have a few questions:
- what is the best sotware to use for capture (freeware?)
- what is the best software to use for editing.
- are there any good sites for this sort of things out there.

I'd really appreciate any advice.

Cheers
Al

Perhaps you should reveal what kind of computer you are
using and which operating system (including version).
Also helpful would be knowing what you want to DO
with your edited video?

Just using a standard PC (PIII 2gig), under Windows XP Pro.
I would like to do some basic editing of the videos, such as joining clips
together. I might also want to play around with speeding up, and slowing
down captured video. All for my own amusement/education.

Thanks

In case you don't realize it, you already have an editing package with your
computer. It's called MovieMaker and, for the price (free), it's not a bad
little package. Lots of tips and tricks are on Microsoft's site at
http://tinyurl.com/53yvx
If you want to go to the next level, my personal recommendation is Vegas
Movie Studio+DVD. It's only $90 online at http://tinyurl.com/anh9v and
includes DVD authoring (which MOvieMaker doesn't offer).

Hi Alec,

Personally, I would recommend one of two routes...

1) Windows Movie Maker which is already on XP and I think is brilliant - so
easy to use, and professional results. It is not a DVD making package
though, so if you want to eventually put your creations on to DVD for you
and others to watch then you will require an additional software package.
You would capture the footage from your JVC in to Movie Maker, edit it as
much as you want then save it as an .avi file which another program could
then import and turn out as a DVD.

Alternatively, if you don't want to do this in 2 separate steps you could
buy any number of software packages that do it all. Recently, I have tried
VideoStudio9, Nero 6 Reloaded, Pinnacle Studio 10, and a few others. The
best BY FAR that I have found is Magix Movie Edit Pro 10 Plus (released
fairly recently). It has so many features, but the best thing of all is that
it never crashes. So many of these software titles made my PC extremely
unstable and if the task got too much then it would just hang, and I'd be
Ctrl-Alt-Del every 20 minutes. Magix never does this.

Also, the support has been outstanding. I can't work out how to do something
and they e-mailed me back within hours and have since replied several times
and gone out of their way to work out why I can't use particular mp3s as
background tracks.

I got Magix for £37 inc postage from Ebay. Brand new, 2 days delivery.
Perfect!

Hope this helps, and good luck with it all. It's hard, time consuming and
frustrating at times... but the results are well worth it!

Hey Alec,

I've been a Pinnacle Studio user since it first came out. It is has
great, simple features but it is buggy. For some, it works flawlessly,
others, not at all. Me, I am in the middle but toward it working
mostly. I have issues now and then. Version 10 is out now but I've
heard is is very buggy already.
