Total novice idiot |
|
|
Hey. First a warning. I am a total novice. I have a four piece band (2
vocals, one guitar, one bass and drums) and I want a good set up for
gigs that isn't going to cost me seventy gig payments to fund. I run a
Marshall AVT150 amp and the bass player still hasn't got his shit
together. Previous band member had more gear than he knew how to use
and we got rim of him for personality issues so we are stuck back at
zero. Looking at up to $2000 AUD to spend. Any tips???

Hire someone to do your sound. Then watch what they're using and how
they're using it. Try to learn from them what you need, how to set it up
and run it.

Hire.
Save your money.
Find a sound tech who does a good job for you.
Get a rep for sounding good.
Get lots of gigs.
Ask your sound tech's advice on gear.
Follow their advice.
Maybe ask them to help you buy used gear.
Lots of bands go out and buy new PA gear on the advice of the sales
dweeb at the music store.
Later, they sell that stuff cheap 'cause they don't know how to use it
and they got no gigs because they sounded like shit.
Some of it is actually decent gear, and you can buy it for half the
new price, barely used, just a few beer spills to clean up.
But you need experienced advice to avoid buying bad used gear.
So to start out ... hire.

In most places, there is always a kid who things sound is more
fun than fast cars and has money somehow. He WANTS to be
in the clubs for status. And a lot of the time his services are much
cheaper than normal rental. If you can find that guy, go for it.
How good is he? Time will tell.........

What a damn shame they know SFA about the gear and technology they use.

I've seen zero evidence that you could even begin to cope with doing
that.
Being a soldering iron jockey doesn't count btw.

This is a bit of a 'how long is a piece of string' question....
Firstly I agree with the other posters who suggest that you get a Sound man
in - a good Sound man in Australia though is probably well out of your
budget (and dare I suggest not as common as you might think depending on
which city you are in). At least your line up sounds pretty basic and in
keeping with some of the more successful pub bands - resist any temptation
to over complicate your music especially in smaller pub sized venues.
For $2000 you are looking at pretty well a Vocal rig only (and even then you
are pushing the budget down a bit) maybe:
1 Behringer PMH1000 rrp $600 tot $600
2 Behringer eurolive F1220 rrp $400 tot $800
2 Behringer Eurolive B1220 rrp $400 tot $800
which brings us to $2200 without Mics, Stands, Cables etc ...
Second hand at CCs light and Sound in Melbourne
( http://ccslightsound.com.au/ )
cuurently have
1 pair wedges : $600
1 pair Ev100s :$600
But currently no decent Mixers/Amps in stock but add to the Behringer above
brings you to $1800
2 shure SM58's from CCs at $130 each (they aint flash but they should keep
going)
blows out the budget before we get to stands and cables ....
For a Vocal System a Budget of $2500 is Tight but do-able - For New (and
even comparable with Second hand ) Behringer is pretty well the main player
in that Price Range and represents Good value for money.
For anything much beyond a Vocal System (ie Micing up drums etc) you will
need to start at probably $4000 and there is no point getting anything
better unless you have someone to run it.
Regards

For mics, check out the Behringer XM8500. 3 for $59 US at Musician's Friend
and they actually sound better than an old, abused Sure SM58!

Dont skimp on mikes, the XM8500 is good value for money i.e it`s cheap
and cheerful, but they dont sound that good, and they are sonically
fragile. ok for church and schools but it`s the first link in the chain
and sets the standard for the rest of the PA. A behringer mike might
sound better than an abused old 58, but that`s not what you want is it.
There are plenty of good vocals mikes available at a reasonable price,
I`m sure plenty of others will chip in with their advice on what to buy,
but I`d recommend Sennhieser for good quality low budget vocal mikes,
others may disagree.

could probably start out with either some new Behringer basics (mixer, amp,
speakers) or used anything. I was just checking out some stuff (had excess
time on my hands) at Music Go Round, a new/used store. They had a tempting
Crown amp for only about $200, over 1,000 watts (1200 or 1400, didn't pay
that much attention, looking for cheap feedback destroyer or effects board).
I would spend the money on cables. Cheapo ones will die quickly and in the
middle of a set. Also by extras! If you need 6 buy 8. If you need 10 buy
14. And then buy a few more! If you buy cheap buy double! |
