Is either format AVI or DIVX better than the other for archiving
movies. Are there any dvd players that will play AVI? I think AVI
compresses smaller than divx.

Hmm as far as I know is avi one of the biggest files.
Some .avi extensions aren`t really avi files but
Xvid or Divx files.

you're confused.
avi is a container not a codec - an avi file can contain xvid, divx or many
other codecs.

I'm trying out InterVideo DVD Copy 4 and it gave me the option of
having either divx or divx (avi) and didn't know if one was better than
the other. But it sounds like the divx (avi) is divx put in an avi
container and that the output should be the same.

Thanks,
Chris

AVI and DivX is not same. AVI - is a container for audio and video
streams. And DivX - is a codec for video compression. So, AVI container
just may includes a DivX video stream.

Note that DIVX encoded movies can now come with an .avi or .divx
extension. The files with an .avi are just a normal video with audio
encoded using the DIVX codec. The files with the .divx extension are
the new "packaged' version with menus etc. that can be seen using the
DIVX player. What I've found is that players will play the .divx files
as though they were .avi, but you won't have access to all the added
features. In net, the video contained in either file is only as good
as the bit rate selected for encoding it.
