OK, newbie to this sound stuff. Flame away if you like...

Drummer here that needs to run his own mix (due to limits on my new bands
board).

So, I had to purchase a couple mics for my kit that were owned by my old
band. I needed a condenser for my hats. The 57 for the snare is a given and
I got that yesterday. Since the $$'s for top line stuff is a little
daunting, I ended up getting a AKG C1000s on eBay for $90. I've been told
it's not really a good mic or a good price.

So, how about it? My current "rig" is as follows;

Audix D6 - kick
Beta98's - toms
57 - snare
Mixer is an Yamaha 01V

Thanks
ps (Glenn, if you're on here, I like second opinions so thanks for the heads
up!)

The Crown C700 or the Oktavas, if you get a good one that is actually an
Oktava and nto Chinese rip of one, are far better than the C1000, which
is a very harsh, nasty mic.

I personally don't have too much of a problem with the C1000 mics - OK, they
aren't the best electret type mic, but they aren't too bad for the price as
new. The price you have for the one on ebay seems like a good second hand
price.
As you already have the mic bought i am not sure why you are asking us. It
would have been better to ask for advice before purchasing, then we could
have shown you some other options available. Asking us now you are either
going to bed told that you made the wrong decision and wasted your money, or
you'll be told you made the right choce, well done - either way it serves no
real purpose other than to humble you, or make your head bigger.

Looks fine to me.
Certainly your D6 is a very nice and easy mike on kick!
Your other options for the $90 C1000s would have been a "chinese" condenser.
Many available.

Right on both counts. If your mains are horrible, especially if they
have cheap horns, better mics might not make a difference. Just turn
the treble down on the 1000s, at least 4db, they are very bright.

If you have a decent PA, then the 1000s have to go.

Rode's small diaphrams, or even the Marshalls, would be much better.
The Oktavas too, but they're less road worthy due to mixed build quality.

Seems fine to me, but others with more live sound experience might have
more comments.

In the realm of chinese mics of a similar nature that get
more respect than C1000s, among others, we have the MXL
603S.

Yes I did buy thinking AKG was a quality product. With my impatience kicking
in, I bought it on impulse, I thought I'd ask after the fact. I'm new to
running sound and I'd like to get as much information as possible. Thanks
for your input.

its worth the 90$
you will find uses for it
I had 4 that I sold for 100$ each
my problem was the size and weight of them made them physically hard to
position securlt
I used them on rack toms, toys, even as a lecturn mic
like they said , not a 200$ mic, the AKG 535 is a much better akg for the
same price
but worth 90$ don't be afraid to experiment with it

Thanks George. I'll play with it's positioning. I mount all my stuff on my
rack (I use carbon tubes so there is a little dampening).

Unless those tubes are filled with liquid, it's damping that they provide
rather than dampening.

Hi Dan,

Just a reminder, can you stop the top-posting please? It's frowned upon here
because it messes up the newsreaders of a couple of our readers who are
blind.

Thanks,
