wireless question |
|
|
I was told conflicting statements about wireless laptop. One tech said
it does not increase your sign on speed and another said he does. Also,
all one needs for wireless laptop ( mainly used for travel purposes )
is a card. What say?

They are both correct, depending on circumstances.
The wireless connection allows you to connect via any wireless router
that allows unsecured user access. These Hotspots are available in a
lot of libraries, hotels, cafes etc.
Your logon time depends on the connection speed. So if you normally use
a 56k dialup connection wireless should be faster. If you normally use
DSL or cable internet connection it may be faster or it may not.
Your computer needs to go through a negotiation process with the
wireless network to get an IP address and the address of the DNS
server. This may take 10 - 30 seconds.
If your laptop does not have built in wireless you can get an external
unit that will hook up via USB port or you may be able to get an
internal card if your laptop has the space. |

You really didn't do much of anything to set up your laptop to take
advantage of broadband at home did you? If your wireless at home, you
have just set up a ID/password connect to the router, of if no wireless,
just plugged in the network cable.
Same goes for on the road. Your wireless card will typicaly sniff out
any wireless access signals when its on. If the signal is free access,
you will simply be able to fly right on. If it's not free, you will need
to supply a id/password to go on. Perhaps it you may need to provide
payment info, such as airports often do to access their systems.
Typically its designed so that messages pop up and tell you what you
need to do. |

As long as the signal strength is adequate, an Internet connection via
wireless should be every bit as fast as that with DSL or cable. |
