What are you conveting from?
Various sources. Mostly DivX and funky codecs (audio and video).
What are you converting to?
To any video formats I want.
For what purpose are you doing the conversion?
Basically, I want to convert from and to various formats I want.

The point is, to get anywhere near "the best", you need to
use programs designed for that particular conversion. At
least for the particular Encoding required. There is no
general purpose "converts all" program that could be called
the best.
AutoGK might be the "best" for DivX or Xvid, Microsoft's
WM9 encoders might be "best" for Windows Media, CCE
makes the "best" MPEG Encoders from what I hear, the
"Super c v1.811 (October 1st, 2005) - Simplified Universal
Player Encoder & Renderer" http://fever.link.free.fr/ seems to
handle a number of codec well (and some not so well, yet);
I could go on like this for some time, but you should get the
idea, by now.
Luck;

Ahhh, OK. If that is the case, then is there a comprenhensive list
of encoders and converters used for these situation? I hate getting
DivX files and VirtualDub cannot open it due to inproper VBR audio
encoding, etc.

http://www.videohelp.com/
Type into the search box: xxx to yyy
where xxx is the format you have,
and yyy is where you want to go.
As comprehensive a list as I've seen.
And user ratings thrown in for good measure. |

I don't get much of a list trying that.
Typing in `Avi to dv' turns up a few hits but apparently only one is
in actual tool. The rest appear to be forum messages.
So I got a list of one => stoik |

AVI is not a codec. AVI is a container file.
What codec is you AVI file? Gspot and other
utilities can tell you far more about your AVI
files than you likely wanted to know. |
