Diamond Audio?? |
|
|
A friend of mine owns an Audio shop and sells Diamond audio but I've
never heard of them, are they any good? I am looking for a single 12"
and amp combo. He said he can get me a Single D1 12" in a ported box
with a Phoenix Gold amp for $350 (he's cutting me a deal since I know
him (supposedly)). I looked at their website and I can't find any D1
subs, the nearest I can find is the D3. Anyone heard of a D1 Diamond
Audio sub?
Best Buy has a sale right now for a pair of series 1 Punch 10" subs
with a rockford 301 something amp and sealed box for the same price
($350), would this be any better than the single Diamond? Obviously I'm
on a budget here.

I have never used Diamond audio gear, But after looking at their gear the D1
looks like their entry level sub. I found some on Ebay item# 5821151746. If
you want to go with a single 12" I would look for a sub around the 500 watt
rms range. The Alpine Type R subs are a great bang for the buck. Something
like the Alpine SWR-1242D with a MTX MXA 4001D mono block amp would kick butt
for around just under $310 shipped, if you dont mind shopping on Ebay Item #
5821972212 & 5819858254 & 5821578458.

He's your buddy, he shouldn't mind giving you a testament to their
quality by installing them in your car before buying. Or letting you for
that matter.
All things audio sound different from vehicle to vehicle.

I use Diamond Audio Hex s500s components with a McIntosh amp for my front
stage. It is quite nice. I have heard Diamond subs and amps in a friends
vehicle and they sounded good. I do not know which models. I use a single
voice coil 12" Jl Audio sub with a JL Audio 250/1 amp for my sub. I am
quite pleased.

He is actually letting me listen to it first and is going to let me use
one of their install bays to put it in myself. I'm going to the shop
tomorrow to check it out. If it's crap I may end up going with eBay. |

Re: Diamond Audio?? |

Diamond Audio makes some pretty nice equipment. I've owned and used the
CM3 and TDX (D9) subs and have known many others. If you have a chance
to check it out first hand, definitely do. My experience has been that
even their entry level gear is as good or better build quality than many
other brands' high-level gear, including RF series 1.
PG amps have had a near "audiophile" rep for a while which seems to have
artificially inflated the price. While it is solid equipment, you can
get an amp that will deliver the same power, and probably have similar
x-over functionality, for less. You might see what else your friend has
to offer.

Please... if they got the model #'s right, they're on crack. The 2400D
was a 2500 watt amp (we under-rated it so the Viper d2500.1 would look
more powerful on paper but they both did well over 2500 watts) into 2
ohms, and the Diamond is rated for 1500 into 1 ohm.
If they mean the current DIrected D2400, it's only a 1200 watt RMS amp
so yes probably the Diamond is stronger, but look at the price difference...

Yeah, the Diamond amps are pretty, but the pound of flesh to own is a
bit steep for doing the same thing. I'm still rocking with my Directed
1100d amps pushing my 2 Diamond TDX subs.

Re: Diamond Audio?? |

Okay So I got the install done last Monday and I've had a week to tune
the system and get a feel for it. My last system was a pair of 10" MTX
subs in a bandpass box and I'm not sure if what I have now is better
or not. I'm kind of thinking the last system was a little louder.
What I got installed was a 12" Diamond D1 sub in a square ported box.
The amp is a 2 Channel Phoenix Gold Octane R2.5:2 250 watt. It hits
pretty hard but I have to turn it up pretty loud before it starts to
give me a good massage. I played around with the levels on the
crossover and that helped to increase the bass at low volumes but I
NEED MORE BASS. :-) For sure it seemed like this system has less
range, it only gets loud on the lower notes. That might be because of
the different box type (ported vs bandpass) or just the tuning freq,
I'm not sure.
This should keep me happy until I can afford a better setup at least. |

I think you hit the reason spot-on. Bandpasses tend to be louder between
2 frequencies, which differ depending on tuning/volume, etc. Usually
loud as all hell. Most prefab bandpasses I've heard peak around 60-90Hz.
The ported may not get quite as loud but will be easier to adjust the
tuning frequency which will peak at a certain area, which like you said
was on the lower notes. Many "SQ" or "SQL" people will tune these down
around 30-40Hz and peak around 40-50Hz. Most people usually think these
sound better than bandpassed as the lower notes are louder and more
pronounced, and are generally more forgiving to the subwoofer as it is
easier to hear when there is trouble.
I think you're on the right track, just work out where you want the
louder frequencies and maybe custom build a box, either bandpass,
ported, or even sealed around that and your car's transfer function.
