"Little rusty but it has great parts. The WE 289A "input" transformers
are used here for both input and outputs. And they are really good,
really pure audio sound for your premp. As with most all transformers,
which are fundamentally ratio and balancing devices, it's quite ok to
use an input as an output, in your preamp, for instance. There's some
nice, unspoiled other parts too, coils, caps etc. It weighs 32-lbs
unpacked (+ 6-lbs packing material) but it is in a rugged case and will
probably get to you ok if you do want to restore it. Buy It Now for
$575."
Your "premp" needs these like it needs end stage syphilis....

**This is rich, coming from someone who promotes the addition of useless
output transformers to perfectly adequately specc'd SS amps.

I don't necessarily advocate it, or disaadvocate it. It has sonic good
and bad points. From a numbers standpoint it is bad, unequivocally, I
concede.
The point is THESE xfmrs are, one, not particularly desireable for
high fidelity because they are poor transformers by modern standards-or
even by 1950s standards-and also, unless you are in a vintage PRO audio
environment where you have stuff that really works best into an actual
600 ohm load-modern pro gear is usually single-ended low impedance to a
XLR connector-you sure as hell do not need a 600 ohm xfmr coupled
preamp input or output.
If you did, far better measuring and sounding ones can be had new for
reasonable prices.
Actually you usually don't need a preamp at all per se, except for
phono, but that's another worm can.
This vendor's blurb is dishonest. If he said, "Collectible-Sort-Of
Test Box Orientals With (What They Think Are) Small Peckers Can Cut Up
For Parts" I could at least not raise the objection of dishonesty. |
