I have a problem with my Pioneer CT-F8282 cassette deck from the mid
'70s.

There is a really high pitched whistle present whenever I want to play
a tape. It's not the tape, but the cassette deck. The whistle increases
in pitch and intensity when I adjust the output volume, and goes away
when the volume is down to zero.

This whistle is really annoying and gives me a splitting headache. Does
anyone know what might be the cause of this?

Also, are the VU meters supposed to move when you're recording? Mine
don't. I don't hear anything either, even when I know audio is going
into the tape deck.

Regards,

Tim

At the least the record / play slide switches need cleaning. This will
probably fix problem #1, and maybe problem #2 as well.
