New EAW and Midas desks? |
|
|
Just been flicking through my latest issue of pro sound news.
EAW have got a new digital desk. Anyone had a chance to look at this yet?
Looks like Mackie decided not to market it under their own name because of
the bad rep their mixers have. Looks interesting with Smaartlive being built
in.
Midas have also announced the DL4 and Mick Hughes has said he'll be using it
on the next Metallica tour. No pics or specs yet though. Nice to see Midas
and A&H finally getting into the digital race though as they are both good
companies and it would have been a shame to see them fall by the wayside.

Yup. Read that too.
I expect it was indeed actually entirely Mackie designed but they realised that
putting the Mackie name on it would cause it be seen as a downmarket product.
The thing about Smaartlive caught my eye too. Is this a trend to 'automate'
sound and mixing by attempting to partly take the sound mixer out of the
equation. Slippery slope imho.

Yeah, I think that's pretty obvious.

I think it's an excellent idea. Most engineers will use it anyway so why not
include it in the digital desk and save having to cart a laptop, preamp etc
around with you. It is a tool, nothing more.
Mixing music is as much an art as it is a science. Until such time as we can
get computers to comprehend abstract then there will be no automated mixing
or artificial intelligence.

Lighting desks for a few years have included a generic visualiser or a
version of WYSIWYG, as digital desks are computers, why not include programs
like Smaart - makes sense really, could prove to be the "killer ap" for the
desk - especially if it works out cheaper to buy a desk with it built in,
than buying a desk and Smaart seperately. |

I agree the EAW will more than likely be a reskinned mackie. EAW makes
Speakers.... I to like the Smaartlive thing, though.

I sure hope that Midas Digital works better than their digital muting on
the H3. Painfully unreliable. I'll let someone else be the guinea pig on
that one...

silly things that can be reduce easily to math will be automated like gain
structure and starting eq adjustments
BTW arn't we supposed to be boycotting EAW for copying the RMX amps?

why can't I bet a desk with a built in playback memory for a few hundred
cd's worth of background music?
or one with a nice big lcd clock with alarm (to wake me up when the dj is
done)

Just looked at the online brochure on he eaw website - the speaker manager
is built in too - so need for external crossover/manager stuff. Am guessing
they've borrowed that part from the DX8 digital matrix mixers.
Am liking it having a touch screen, something I'd like my PM1D to have.
Looking at the photos, the pots and faders look a bit cheap, and well,
Makie-y
Inputs and outputs wise it seems to measure well against a PM1D, and the mic
pres are remote controllable also.
I want to go and play with one! |

Agreed, I've thought about the hard disc idea for music playback, but also
for SFX
Grand MA lighting desk has a clock option as a screen saver, not sure
whether it has an alarm option on it though |

No, I think its just more convenient for display and control than an
external laptop.
I think we will see consoles of this type enabling cobranet control of
speaker controllers. |

Or having the speaker controllers built into the actual desk like this new

Once you digitise the mix it doesn't matter where the speaker |
controllers are, but if you have to feed analogue audio back to the
stage on 8 lines plus more for infill etc you start to lose the advantage.
I'd be happier being able to bring up a control page of my speaker
controllers of choice at the speaker end rather than having to run
analogue subs lows mids highs x 2 x number of zones from the console.
Using IP networking all the way fron console to amplifier is the
ultimate goal. |
