Moving video from IBM to MAC |
|
|
Any tips on how to transfer/move digital video from an IBM to a MAC? We
have been filming digital video and putting it on our IBM but we now
have a MAC and want to move the clips to the MAC so we can edit and
play with it. Both machines have CD burners and we tried making a CD of
the clips but MAC will not recognize the format. What format will MAC
recognize. What should I save the clips as on the PC?
Or can I creat a portal or network the IBM and MAC so I can just go in
from the MAC and drag them over. I recall doing this years ago at work
where I needed logos that were on a MAC so we created a folder on the
MAC desktop that allowed me access to the IBM computers folders.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

First, pick a file format. At
http://www.uwm.edu/~elsmith/videofileformats.html it looks like MOV
would be a good choice on the Mac, but there are other possibilities.
Second, pick a media. My choice would be an external USB connected hard
drive. I noticed the other day that Sam's club has some pretty good
prices on these. The latest ones are very compact, and do not require
an external power supply. You can also use this later on for doing
system backups.

Simply put them on a network and use the 'connect to server' menu selection
on the mac. Samba,.

When you captured your footage on the PC system, you used a codec.
(whether you realized it or not) Likely AVI, Divx, I-264, or something
similar.
Macs are Quicktime native.
If you drag an AIV file into a Quicktime timeline you'll likely be asked
to render the video which is a hassle.
This is transcoding - re-compressing clips from one codec to another.
And it's a process that risks introducing errors that can leave your
footage looking bad.
Compression or codec incompatibilities can drive you nuts.
Unless you have a ton of clips, I'd just export a batch capture list
from your old software, and use the batch list to recapture the clips on
the Mac.
It's the best way to insure your video quality will be as good as
possible and your footage will work seemlessly with your Mac editing
software.
Good luck. |
