Any help is appreciated....have been using a 1280 epson photo stylus and
have been quite happy with the 8 by 10 prints on Epson Premium glossy photo
paper...

upgraded to the 2200 and the colors are so hard to match to the
monitor...not sure what to do at this point...

I have downloaded the Epson Paper color profiles from their site....have
been using photoshop 8 for the color management and using ICM with no
printer software management...

the 1280 prints have more contrast and detail from the same TIFF image ...
Have had a friend print on his 1280 which also looks like the original
TIFF...

most prints have a haze to them and a rose or magenta color dominance...

i have not done any monitor calibrating...using Samsung monitors...

confused as to why the 1280 prints look so good on several 1280 printers
yet the 2200s look abysmal..despite trying a gazillion different parameter
changes...

again ...help is appreciated

Calibrate your monitor before making any judgement about matching.
Calibrate your printer with the inks you use and the paper you use
with one of the many profiling packages before making any judgement
about matching.

The 2200 prints I have seen compare quite well to those from my
1280... Jim

Thanks for the advice Jim....

any preference on sites or software for calibration?

thanks

If you are seeing a strong over all red/pink tint in the preview and the
final print using an Epson printer you are applying color management more
than once when you print. That red/pink tint is unmistakeable and absolutely
diagnostic of double color management (barring catastrophic printer
malfunction) using Epson printers. Believe me, I had to learn this the hard
way.

When you print using CS you can choose to use or not use color management.
It would be more correct for you, under Print with Preview, to use "output"
rather than "color management" and then print directly using the Epson
printer driver settings you prefer. If this clears the pink cast in the
print preview that confirms that your problems are due to errors in color
management.

If you obtain a colorimeter and calibrate your monitor then you can use
color management following the Epson protocols. Fortunately for you Epson
makes color management relatively straight forward and their site has many
instructional aides, like the Epson print academy. If the Print Academy is
still offered you will find it the most useful $ spent if you want to see
clear demonstrations about how to use CS, Epson printers and color
management.

I'll give you this URL first and then tell you something about Epson
printers you might not already know. Watch the wrapping of the link!
ftp://ftp.epson.com.au/pub/epson/Drivers/ICMprofiles/EPSON%20RGB%20Print%20G
uide_WIN.pdf

Epson printers have "pretty good" colour management out of the box.
Unfortunately no one told Adobe that! When you have a problem with colour
management, don't manage the colour at all until you know where you are
going.

In Photoshop, under edit, turn off colour management.
Open a file you know is basically correct and don't alter it.
Choose "print with preview" from the file menu.
Tick the box under the preview window which says "more options".
In the print space which probably says "same as source", change it to
"printer colour management" and make sure your printer is set to use the
paper which is in it and let it manage the colour automatically. This may
not produce absolutely precise prints but it will get you very close the
actual file in colour.

Now if you can't/won't don't know how to follow a dedicated process to
balance the colours in your system, this is as close as you'll get. To get
closer, change the printer to colour management and play with it's colour
adjustment sliders. When you have a print which is a replica of the photo
you started with, adjust your monitor until it looks like the print.

Now...
What you *really* need to do is use Adobe Gamma to get your monitor right
then begin colour management by following Epson's tutorial. In the "print
with preview" where you gave over colour management to the printer, you can
choose the ICC profile for the paper/ink combination you have and turn off
colour management at the printer.

Photoshop is the only point at which you should manage colour. Understanding
enough about it to actually do that is another thing altogether. Hopefully
this brief instruction will get you going in the right direction.

I have had better results with Kodak's profile (and instructions!) than
Epson's.

Brief notes:

You probably don't need a Spyder or Monaco EZcolor - the default profiles
were actually pretty good.

Actually, Adobe and Epson have worked together quite a bit to improve
the color from their printers. (Of course, Adobe has also worked with
most of the other priinter manufacturers as well)

That step is counterproductive, and unnecessary for getting good prints.

That would only work if the original images are very close to sRGB on
Windows and AppleRGB on Macintosh.
Because all you're doing is removing the calibration and making the
printer driver make a guess about the color in the image.

Please see http://computer-darkroom.com/ for some instructions on how
to print with better results.

I had exactly this problem when I applied colour profiles in PS together
with the printer profiles when I didn't know any better. The Epson profiles
do a great job and I now use only those. Recommend turning off the
PS profiles.
By the way, Corel Photopaint, which is cheaper than PS, provides
much better printing facilities. PS is far too restrictive.

File>Print with Preview>Show more options.

Make sure you set the Source Space correctly.

Set the print space to the profile for your paper.

Page Setup>Printer>Properties>Advanced>No Color Adjustment

DO NOT set "ICM" in the printer driver, whatever you do.

That should do it. If not, there is something wrong either with your
images or your printer.

Even Epson itself advises that you turn off the print-driver's color
management in favor of Photoshop's.

That statement carries with it the presumption, you can get Photoshop to
actually make a colour correct print in the first place. It may be all
well
and good for you and me but the OP obviously doesn't have that knowledge -
yet (hopefully) this way he can at least find a starting point. All the
conflicting advise from everyone else will only give him grief... And prey
tell, what is your advise, eh?

That when Epson advises against the use of it's own color management in
favor of Photoshop's...that perhaps it's worth a second look.

Quote:
Or did you just interject for a bit of
amusement?

I'd be happy to provide more input if the OP has a specific question.

Defaults....

then assigned a color profile of RGB 1998

Source SPace...Document RGB
Print Space ...SP 2200 Premium Glossy_PK
Intent...Relative COlorimetric with Use Black point compensation

color management on printer ....ICM

ICC PROFILE....NO COLOR adjustment

and still...color way off of my 1280 performance...

thanks again for the help
