DVD plus VCRs |
|
|
Complete novice here. Our VCR has packed up after many years use.
When we looked in the shops the assistant said not many people buy
them now, they buy the VCR/DVDs. Just been searching and read a
comment that it is better to buy them separately. We are not technos
and regularly record from TV. What advice can you give? What is best
for us to buy? Thanks, Diana

I'd get the combo unit - and a good one, not a cheapie. Quite happy I did,
too. No real point in having separates (for the most part).

Do be aware ahead of time that legal requirements mean that you
will NOT be able to copy some (maybe even most) DVD's to tape
I have a GO Video model and it plays both media well... it will
even play the DVD-R's I create of my own hobbist movies

Some people like combos to save space, but you should never buy any type of
combo, tv vcr tv dvd, etc..... 2 different units in one device, twice as
likely to breakdown. harder to repair, just throw away trash. if anyone has
one of these that actually last more than a year, it`s likely because it
never gets used.

I suppose you have a separate TV for video and a radio for sound? ... no
point in buying a "combo" picture-and-sound TV. |

Combos in theory are a good idea, but in practice, just as was said here, |
are not typically as reliable as seperates, or as high a quality as
seperates, and if the dvd or vcr goes, IF you decide to have it repaired,
you lose both while its being fixed. Unless you HAVE to buy one, dont. |

According to my daughter today we don't need any kind of DVD player as
all we ever do is record from TV onto video and watch the
occasional pre-recorded video. She said bluntly "have you ever bought
a DVD", answer NO - well, you don't ned something to play them on
then! Looks like we'll be just buying a VCR afterall whether we are
out of date or not. From what I see on the web they are cheap at
least. Son in law said "don't get an expensive one". So, I didn't need
to bother you all but thanks anyway. Usenet is great!

In article <4179e1b1_2@news.cybersurf.net>,
Spockfoo@aol.net says...

I used to subscribe to that back when the individual
units were $300+. Now, I'm not so sure.
If the choice is between a $60 VCR + $40 DVD unit
compared to a $100 combo unit. I may well decide on the
combo unit. If one part of the two-fer breaks, I'm not
all that put out to have to go out and buy a $40-60
replacement unit for the part that's broken. It's below
my pain threshold at that point, if it works great, if
not oh well.
DVDs are also less prone to mechanical issues then the
Rube Goldberg design of VHS players. So a TV+DVD player
is probably a decent idea for a small room where size
matters.
The other question is whether the two-in-one unit is
being marketed based on cost (in which case you'll get
two inferior units) or convenience (where you might get
two good units packaged together). |

Long term, the VHS tape format will go the way of the 8 track tape
cartridge. Already, most of the rental places are primarily DVD media.
I've gone both ways (separate DVD and combo units). The prices are so cheap
now that a combo unit is attractive to me. I bought a Zenith one because
it played DVD +R format which is what my burner burns.
