What's the best way to get TiVo access in exercise room? |
|
|
Construction on the new exercise room starts next week. We are
converting what used to be a balcony off the master bedroom.
I would like to put a TV in there and, of course, have it connected to
a TiVo. The thing is, there is a TV and TiVo in the next room. Is
there a good way to put just a TV in the exercise room and use the
TiVo in the bedroom? I would want to be able to control it with the
remote in the exercise room, but the TiVo is in the next room and
there's no line of sight from the exercise room to where the TiVo is.
We also have a second TiVo downstairs. They are standard Series 2
TiVos connected to Comcast digital cable. They are not networked.
Thanks

Maybe not the "best" but probably the cheapest is to run coax from the
Tivo RF out to the TV in the exercise room. That gets the signal
there. Then install a pair of IR extenders. The brand I used is by
Leapfrog.
www.pennythrift.com and search for Leapfrog IR extender. Or if this
link transfers....

I use Terk's LF10 Leapfrog extenders; the type that send audio+video
over regular telephone line (and sends IR back upstream).
Using the TiVo's A/V outputs is better than using RF over coax.

The TiVo RF port is already connected to the TV in the bedroom. Would
I need coax splitter? I still want the TV in the bedroom to work like
it does now.
How much would a splitter degrade the signal?
Thanks for that pointer. I didn't know about them.
So I put one in the exercise room and one by the TiVo. If I am in the
bedroom, the remote talks to the TiVo directly. If I am in the
exercise room, the TiVo remote talks to the Leapfrog extender, which
sends an rf signal to its sibling by the TiVo, which emits the IR
signal that would have come from the remote. Right?
Where does the Leapfrog unit by the TiVo go? There is really no place
to put it in front of the TiVo unit.
If this is not the "best" solution, what would be?

I couldn't find the LF-10. Do you have a link?
I did find the LF-30S, which appears to send audio and video over a
2.4GHz wireless setup. There are a lot of reports of interference with
other devices.

Correct on all points.

There are basically two options.... the unit that receives the RF from
the remote Leapfrog unit in "front" of the Tivo.... it seems to work
OK up to about 15 ft away, or place it on or behind the Tivo and use
the cable that connects to it and place the small IR transmitter
directly in front of the IR sensor of the Tivo.

I really didn't look any farther than this because I didn't want to
spend any more money. But there are devices that will allow you to
combine several Tivo outputs into one coax (each assigned to a
different channel) so that you could see the output from "any" of your
Tivos on "any" TV set in our home. There are also devices that will
convert a Tivo remote to send an RF signal instead of an IR one, which
will travel anywhere in your home.

Avoid 'em like the plague. I've tried several wireless video senders and
they're all junk. Beyond interference most don't really work for more than
a room's distance. Might work in your case but just buy it from place that
takes free returns...

I feed my Tivo to other TVs using a Radio Shack RF amp. Feed channel 3 from
the Tivo into the RF amp and then out to the TVs. Works great. It's RF
signal quality, of course, but it's more than enough for most medium-sized
TVs. If I were feeding it to a big screen I'd much rather use s-video, not
RF.
Using RF channel 3, through a distribution amp, along with the Terk
extenders is probably your best low-cost solution.

Right now (early Sunday morning) www.terk.com is off-line. Google has

That's why I chose the wired version.

My LF-10S (sender) is behind my TiVo. Since I am already using one
set of A/V outputs, I put the Terk in between the TiVo and its VCR.
The LF-10R (receiver) is the only thing that has to be out front,
where it can pick up on the remote control's IR signal.
