I'm seriously thinking about gettign a DVP-642 (The Phillips machine). I
need to know if it can play divx files directly from a DVD, not a CD mind
you, but a DVD. Will it play mp3 files from a DVD? These are the most
important factors for me. Thanks for the help and any other reccomended
models I should look out for.

Well, seeing as my DVP-642 plays everything else I've thrown at it, it
wouldn't surprise me if it also does what you want it to do.

Hell, the thing even plays VCD/SVCD burned to CD-R as data files.

It will. I back up all my mp3 to dvd. It will play them flawlessly. Like
the other poster mentioned, it will play everything I have thrown at it.
That includes all CD and DVD variations. The single best purchase for my
home audio entertainment needs.

Based on your glowing recomendations, I just went out and bought one
tonight. I'm shitting my pants as we speak. The first thing I thre at it
was a CD with an AVI of Rushmore on it that was at least 3 years (probalby 4
years) old from a pile of old disks I had. It started right up and the
quality was breathtaking, better than any VDC I've ever been able to burn.
I also threw some old TV eppisodes at it that were AVI format burned to CD;
again, no problems at all and great quality. I burned a DVD with 6
different AVI files on it. 4 of the six play look better on my screen than
they do on my PC monitor. 2 of the files won't play, but that's a minor set
back, I can always bounce them to a divx format that will work. I havent'
tried an MP3 DVD yet, but I'm assuming ti will work well. So far I'm in
heaven. I used to dream about units like this. The whole thing came to
$100 Canadian with taxes, which, as DVD players go, makes it pretty much
disposable. With DVDR's being so cheap now, I can see that my life is
pretty much over now, I'm going to be glued to my file sharing programs and
to my TV set. Oh well, there are worse ways to meet one's end I suppose.

Yep, you will now never see the light of day again! You might also want to
purchase a new desk chair with the saved money. Because your butt is gonna
be glued to it 24/7 !

I even bought some brand "x" DVD-r's when i first got my pc dvd burner.
Turns out, they were so bad, only a few could be burned onto and even then,
could not always be played back. That is using 4 different pc DVD players.
I then took one that would not play and popped it into the Phillips. It
played! Ha!

Amazon.com has the Philips DVP 642 on sale for $63.94 US. If you sign

up for their Amazon.com credit card and use it to buy the Philips DVP
642 dvd player they will also give you $30.00 towards the purchase.
I bought one and it ended up costing me $33.94 and the shipping is
free.
If you are in Europe the model number is a Philips DVP 762 instead. I
don't know if they have that credit card offer over there or not.

I will cut the fricking cards up when they arrive though as the
interest rate is too high. 13.74%

J.P. Who can't wait for his to arrive. :)

My credit is so bad, I would beg for 13%! Any one of those credit robber
type people would be crippled by my debt!

Not a bad deal at all...33$. My friends know I have several dvd players.
Most are in the closet now. I let them watch a movie or two at my house.
Then, they ask for the DVD to borrow. That is when the problem of telling
them its not "your fathers oldsmobile". They cannot believe i can put 3-4
full length (xvid) movies on one disk. One that their 150$ dollar unit
cannot do. I make most movies in two ways. One is Xvid, the other is a
DVDShrink version. If your not familiar with DVD Shrink, check it out. It
will convert movies DVD standards so the "plain jane" dvd players can use
them. I can hand out the DVDshrink version to them if they are nice, or a
beautiful girl. Of course, Phillip (as we call him) can play it without a
hitch.

Im in my (cough) upper thirties. Most of my friends are just catching on to
Mp3. This blows their mind.

I use Netflix and their main distributor is very close. If done right, I
can record 6 movies in 6 days. That is including turnaround via the mail
system.
