Dual Layer DVD-RW ever coming? |
|
|
I have hesitated buying a new DVD-DL for my PC because there still isn't any
dual layer rewriteable capability. Is this a pipe dream, or are
manufacturers waiting until there is a clear Blue-ray or HD-DVD winner
before they develop 8.5GB and above rewriteable?

Hmm .. I never use re-writable media in my burners (716A and 716UF). I
burn to keep. I might try such on my TV DVR, but it is not DL. So the
only -RW stuff I use is single layer minis in my camcorder.
OTOH .. I've not tried any dual layer burns, either, even though I have
the capability.

I don't do a lot of DVD burning myself but I have been wanting the
capability to do incremental backups on my docs file, which has grown well
above 30GB in itself. If they eventually develop Blue-ray or HD-DVD
rewriting capability so that I can keep an ever-changing docs file backed up
(say, with a 100GB or so capacity) , that'll be something I'd pay for. Of
course, it may take a while to get here. |

People who depend on RW discs love being punished.

Hi
Both +RW and DVD-RW have dual layer versions being spec'd and tested,
however due to the much lower reflectivity they will not play on the
majority of existing DVD players or readers, because of this, and that
Blu-Ray and HD-DVD are on their way DVD-RW/+RW dual layer may never be that
popular or readily available.
