I think this topic has been banded about before but I do have a few
questions that a bet is riding on. First off, I was at the Ted Nugent
Concert a month ago in Ventura and I also attended the Cake concert
last week. Both of these concerts were way too loud. I thought Cake
would be a little more concerned about sound quality but I had to wear
ear plugs or it would start to hurt. I usher at allot of shows at the
Arlington Theatre in Santa Barbara and every single one of them is too
loud. Morsey, Manson, Flaiming lips, Beck, etc... Ok here are my
questions.

1. Do the bands bring in all of the P.A. gear? Or does the house have
it's own P.A. System and the bands just run their mikes and gear
through them?
2. Who Determines the sound level. Is it the mixing desk guy or do the
bands say we want 100DB? Or is it the house people? Or who?

I must admit I always have thought most all concerts are too loud. I
remember Zeppelin at a Day on the Green show and it was just a
incredibly loud high end tinny guitar sound. I couldn't get far enough
away to not have pain shoot through my head.

Thanks to all who provide me with the inside scoop on this subject.

I saw Ted in a arena show at a rodeo i was working at a couple of years

ago. On a scale of 1 to 10 it was a -2. The back line was so dam loud
that is was impossible to have ANY kind of mix out of the mains.
It was just painful. The poor FOH guy could do nothing with what he
has at that point. ANd the same rig was used for other shows and
some were OK. SO it was not the rig.

IMO, there is NO excuse for it. This ain't the 70/80's with marshall
stacks lining the back line all up on 10.

I know that Rat Sound provides PA for Beck. They have also provided for
Cake. Most of the larger acts will carry their own production.

It's usually the FOH engineer, the band/management, or both. The house
may or may not put a limit on the average and peak SPL.

Perceived loudness is at least partially subjective. 110dBA at your
ears of 1kHz to 5KHz material is going to hurt a lot more then
frequencies well below those. The older Zeppelin system was probably an
old rig that was designed more for throw then sound quality. It was
more common in those days, as power amps of the day couldn't produce
the kind of output they do now and horn designs did not have a very
smooth response. In comparison, the high quality boxes and processing
today are capable of some amazing sound if the rig is well tweaked and
the person driving knows what they're doing. They are also capable of
some scary output as well. Knowing where to stop is up to the driver.

So, who's got big enough 'nads to tell Ted to turn it down? ;-)

A pigeon once made a dramatic statement regarding the loudness of a
Nugent show apparently..........

Phildo

"The Nuge" just played our state fair

free show only a couple of thousand showed and most left when he started in
with the N word
he was the most pathetic thing I ever witnessed
total waste of air allowing him to continue breathing
but the world is strange in many ways
I am glad his kind and attitude is only found in skinhead enclaves

Not only would I tell him to turn down, I'd tell him he stinks as a DJ.

He is not loud on stage and his cabs blow across the stage not
downstage. He wares earplugs as he has had hearing loss from childhood.
He pays a lot of money and likes it loud. His fan base knows what there
in for going to a Ted show. You can tell him he's not a good DJ ... I
can set it up for you if you like... I just want to record the exchange.
