Yes yes, I know it's personal choice, yada yada, but I was hoping you guys
could point me to some websites that reviewed aussie speakers so I could cut
the 'listening test' down to a minimum (time constraints and many of them
sound the same to me!).

I'm after a 5 speaker package that doesn't need a sub. The VAF DC series
looks great. At $4.3k (self assembly) it sounds like you get a lot for your
money but it's still bloody expensive!

Firstly, how much do you really want to spend and secondly
for HT you need a sub so why don't you want one?

Well, I know this is going to sound stupid, but that does not bother
me...

If you have the Money, buy B&W's.

If you want reviews, look at the sound and Image awards magazine (only
available in magazine form I believe).

Well the $4.2k package from VAF is pretty compreshensive and the reviews
sound like it's great value for money. Shouldn't have too much problem with
assembly. It'd be nice to keep it below $4k.

I don't want a sub because that takes even more room (these speakers are
already too large for the apt, maybe I should use DC-7's instead of DC-X's)
and according to VAF and a few reviews, the DC-X's do bass pretty well
without a sub, and further, I'm not one for pounding bass beat or ear
splitting explotions that rumble the neighbours. Excelent sound will be just
fine for me...

If I can get that without a sub, then great. Although I guess all of the
compact speaker ranges use a sub pretty extensively to compensate for the
loss in output from the small speakers. And if I went compact, a sub would
be necessary.

Hmm, seems if anyone writes a review, they just say it's the best thing they
ever heard - no matter what the product : )

I guess audio technology has reached the point where improvements are now
just minor tweaks.

My system is not compact but a sub makes all the difference, even a
small sub adds a lot to a soundtrack. I was so poor I built my first
subs from kits. you can build one from $200

You get these audio magazines reviewing products, there hardly going to say
there a load of shit, and risk loosing advertising dollars.
I really would doubt, there is anyone out there in the business, that will
give you an honest verdict on anything, Even a private reviewer won't write
the truth, simply because if he does say there crap, the product supplier
won't let him review anything else.
So everything that's reviewed , comes up smelling of Roses,

The only way to get any idea of anything , is to hear it yourself and form
your own opinion of the product. In other words do the rounds of the
showrooms, spend a lot of time, and then decide what your going to spend
your money on. Then spend the next few years convincing yourself that you
have made the right choice.

Have a look at the Whatmough perfomance series as an option, after discounts
they might be around your budget. Depending on the size of your room for 2ch
music and most non action movies you can get away without a subwoofer.
However anything with a lot of action/sound effects etc will make a big
difference. The subwoofer can always added later and integrated into
whatever speakers you eventually decide on.

Interestingly, IT reviews tend to be less biased, regardless of advertising.
You always find a few bum products in any review writeup.

Obviously Audio reviewers are spineless : )

Yeah, they might be less biased, but they also are less likely to know
what to listen for.

Unfortunately there are 2 types of 'Good' speakers, the acousticly
accurate ones, and the ones that sound good. Which ones do you buy?

For example, when you attach a sub to a system, do you match it to the
level of the rest of the system, or turn it up a bit more because it
sounds cool? Accurate or sounds good...

In my opinion the sub should -NOT-be overstated,it should not be heard
unless needed. sometimes it simbly provides "ambient rumble" if a bomb
explodes you should -FEEL-it ,set your sub to Saving Private Ryan
landing scene, then try something with no bass evident and the sub
should remain unniticed. Trial and error is the key.

FWIW, a mate of mine with a 10k B&W speaker system told me how his $2000
1000w sub was indispensible, so he turned it off and played a dvd and
he says "see", so i change the settings in the amp to send the 0.1
channel to the mains, and low and behold there was fantastic bass, we
did a couple of comparos and the sub was better but not outrageously
so.

The reason I tried this is because I have always operated without a sub
with Mirage M7's and have never felt the need to go out and buy a sub,
so decent fronts can do a very good job of it, and your neighbours will
thank you for it!

dont worry about the petrol blowers and mowers at 7.30 on a sunday
morning, a HT sub at 11pm midweek is heaps more annoying to your
neighbours.
