Hi Folks - please help a newbie! I have a Canon G2 and when the
camera is in P (program) mode the shutter always fires three times -
even if I just press the shutter button down once briefly. I do not
have the manual/timer button set for multiple shots - only the single
rectangle shows in the LCD. I'm sure there's a simple config I'm
messing up - but I can't find it!

You may have it set to bracket the exposure -- which usually results in
three exposures in each set.
