maybe he doesn't track them, I play solos and can't tell you what
notes I played, but I can play a scale and I know mthe names of the
notes I am tuning to
but I bet if you asked him to play a C he could
does he know what notes he tunes to or is it completely random every
time he picks up the instrument?

No, he plays by sound and position. Honestly, I played bass for the
guy for two years.. I'm not making this up.

He NEVER knew what key a song was in, whether it was major or minor,
not even the root of the chord.

does he know the "names " of the strings?

I can have problems with all those unless I stop to think of them

Sometimes, but it depends on what tuning he is in...

If he's in standard tuning, I think so... but we always made our own
charts and just learned them from listening to him play the songs, we
stopped asking after a while.

So the boost in bass from directional mics, shows up in the monitor, but
isn't
amplified to feedback levels because the proximity effect doesn't affect
the
total system gain... interesting... I learn something every day! Thanks
Phil!

Good example is with a loud wedge mix you can change the frequency of
feedback buy the shape of your mouth even getting 8K reflections off you
teeth. It has to be right at the edge of feedback and can hurt your ears
so if you try these please ware ear protection or you might get a gig
with a hard rock band.
