There is endless discussion of the inability to hear any differences
between competently designed inexpensive audio electronics (amps,
preamps
and CD players) and the pricey high end stuff. How about giving us some
guidance with some specific recommendations?

Pioneer DV-575 driving a Yamaha AX-592, connected with any old $20
interconnects and basic 14AWG Home depot wire. Connect those to any
'high end' speaker of your choice (making sure you pick one whose
impedance doesn't dip much under 4 ohms), and you'll have properly
high-end sound quality for a reasonable budget.

Thanks for the recommendations but I can't find a source for either unit.
Neither unit even appears on it's respective manufacturer's web page. Any
other recommendations for currently available (in the US) budget CD players
and/or amplifiers?

John

The Pioneer DV-575 has been replaced by the DV-585 which, I think, has
been replaced by the DV-588 and, by the time you get to the shops, will
be replaced by something else. However, they are all cheap consumer
Pioneer DVD players that play CD, DVD-Audio and SACD. I doubt there
will be significant sonic differences although the specs appear
slightly different (even cheaper components at a guess). Everyone I
know has experience with the DV-575A.

The DV-588A-S is available (though currently back ordered) from Audio
Advisor who offers a 30 day return if not satisfied. I will plan on giving
it a try.

Thanks,

If you're so frickin' pathetic that you can't follow up those
recommendations to the nearest available US product, you don't deserve
any help. Still suckling at 28?

Latest version of the AX-592:

Yamaha also makes this, but I haven't seen specs for it:

Thanks John for admitting to your inability to properly

You obviously don't know a basic rule of audio - when levels
aren't matched, things sound different.

It is well known that during A/B comparisons the louder choice is the
one most likely to be chosen as sounding best. The poster you are
criticizing has stated that his listening comparisons are based on
months of listening to the same setup. I don't think the sound levels
issue applies to months of listening, I think it is meant as a guide to
A/B comparisons.

I used to have both my CD player and my computer attached to my receiver
and the sound from the computer was about 2/3s as loud as the CD player.
Every time I switched sources I would adjust the volume. I don't ever
remember not doing so. I imagine that after months of listening to new
equipment the poster would have made the long journey from the couch to
the volume knob.

Unless a long term evaluation turns up something clearly
ugly, it is generally pretty insensitive to actual
differences. People generally come up with a conclusion
anyway, so this conclusion will probably not be based on
just sound quality.

When you adjust levels by ear, on closer examination you can
almost always hear the difference by ear.

OK, learn listening. Arny has some examples on his site that may be good
for ear-sharpening, something I supposed rather than know because I
never did take the time to listen to them myself.

I did recently mention something about what to listen for when
listening, possibly in this newsgroup, mostly it is a topic I would
write about in some context.

Kind regards

Oh, now I get what you mean. Get a high quality sound card for your
computer and a good poweramp. Put a fixed 10 to 20 dB attenuator on the
input of the poweramp, at least large enough to prevent any thump from
turning the computer on or off from clipping the poweramp. Supplement
with the smallest KEF Cresta loudspeakers, still free from metal dome
folly, and quite possibly be happy. Quality subwoofing may be relevant.
There are many other fine loudspeakers out there, please be aware that I
have not actually listened to this KEF model, this because hifi retail
aint what it used to be, but they ought to be good based on specs and
design.

Kind regards
