what will tivo do without subscribing? |
|
|
Picked up a free 40GB Tivo at Fry's yesterday... no subscription
commitment required. I was wondering what features the Tivo has if I
don't get the subscription and want to just use it as a DVR. Can I
do any manual recording, play or rewind of live tv? Does Tivo-To-Go
still work? Will it talk to my satellite receiver?

What model is it?
A Series 1 standalone will do time-and-channel recording (at least
the vast majority of those sold will). There are nag screens if
you invoke something that needs the guide data, which is perhaps
annoying but not fatal. You can also pause live TV.
A DirecTivo can't be used for much more serious than a doorstop
without a subscription. If you expect to use it to anchor boats,
get a subscription.
A Tivo with a Tivo Basic subscription (which comes with the box and
doesn't require payment) will be able to do all the stuff you expect
a DVR to do.

It's the 40GB standalone version, series 2. |

And you can pay more than that for a cell phone which does nothing
without the service.
Series2 standalone TiVos are doorstops without a subscription. The
exception being the Toshiba and Pioneer DVD-RW TiVos which include
TiVo Basic. All TiVo and Humax branded boxes do nothing without a
sub, monthly or lifetime.

They lied. Without service, you have a paperweight.

No. Most Series1 boxes have limited functionality and can still do manual
recording, with the pausing and rewinding of liv tv. Series2 does not.

Why would you expect features of the service to work sans service?

Maybe there is no commitment required, but in order to use it, you must sub
it. |

I think he means there is no *contract* required. That's a very
different thing. Though, I think if he looks at his paperwork carefully
I think he *will* find that there is a 1 yr required subscription to get
his $150 rebate (unless this is a different promotion than Tivo's ever
run before).

In fact, here is the Tivo rebate form (I got it from the BestBuy site
because the Fry's/Outpost.com site's rebate link is 6 mo. out of date
here: http://image.ak.outpost.com/art/rebates_pdf/4158373.pdf ):
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?id=cat12105&type=page&rebateid=60865&skuid=6654881&h=387
The applicable portions are below, 2) means you must activate the
product for 30 days to be eligible for the rebate, 3) requires 1 yr sub
for rebate eligibility, and 4) states that service is required for
functionality:
(2) TiVo service* or TiVo PlusTM * service (on DVD products) activation
required between 9/04/05 and 01/15/06 and *must be active for at least
30 days* (beyond TiVo trial period) in order to be eligible for rebate.
TiVo service or TiVo Plus service must also be active at the time of
rebate processing to be eligible for rebate. TiVo Basic service not
eligible for rebate. (3) A minimum one year service commitment is
required for all new TiVo service or TiVo Plus service activations. No
early termination fee will be assessed if TiVo service or TiVo Plus
service is cancelled within 30 days of activation. Early termination fee
of $150 applies if TiVo service or TiVo Plus service is cancelled or
otherwise terminated prior to fulfillment of one (1) year commitment.
(4) TiVo service or TiVo Plus service required for full functionality.
DVRs with TiVo BasicTM service are not eligible for the $150 rebate.
You know they have lawyers go over this stuff, right?

I have a Sony SVR-3000 (Series 2) with a bunch of recorded stuff on its HDD.
I recently hooked up a SA 8300HD, and have subsequently transferred all
recordings from the TiVo to the SA 8300HD. So if I were to cancel my TiVo
subscription, even if I can't record anything with the TiVo, can I at least
watch my recorded programs? Thanks.

Nah, more like some idiot who didn't know what he was talking about told you
the wrong thing. There's a difference between be a clueless retail idiot
and lying. The average clerk doesn't know enough to lie, more like bullshit
just to keep from looking like a fool. |

it started recording a football game. 60 minutes started an hour later so I
pressed instant record and it thinks it's recording Cold case files. So
what does TIVO do again? And I thought it was smart. What a let down.§
Ahh, trolls, haven't had one of those in these parts in awhile.
