use, 100GB for user recordings. DTV will use their space to pre-load
movies, etc, onto the unit. Then when the user wants to view 'VOD'
they can select from any of the pre-loaded content with no delay.

You know, with a 240GB HDVR2, I always have plenty to watch, and don't
need any "pseudo-VOD". I suspect this will be true for most users who
have a DVR of any sort. Now, if the box wasn't a DVR but only a hard
drive for storing this "VOD", then I could see people watching those
movies.
It's even worse if the "VOD" is like that of cable companies. If you
subscribe to HBO, then you get HBO shows on VOD for free...otherwise,
you can't get them at all. With a my DirecTiVo, I can do exactly the
same thing by programming it to record the shows I want from HBO.
One last thing is that I'll bet that there won't be any way to upgrade
the hard drive.

Hackers will probably figure it out in time. But certainly not when
they first ship.

Yeah, even the (mostly) unhackable UTV box could have the hard drive
upgraded. That machine was designed so that if the disk didn't boot
then it'd dial up and try to reinitialize the disk and download the
software. Worked great to upgrade from 40Gb to 120Gb :-)

It's a shame, if DirecTV ever drops tivo I'll ditch them in about 2
seconds. I checked out the alternatives when my dtivo unit took a dump
this summer. Even though I could have gotten sweet deals from dish or
the cable company I stuck with dtivo for the TIVO! The tivo is the
only reason they are my provider.
I'd rather have tivo than directv any day...

Well, you've got two years to go. I doubt DirecTV is going to continue
with TiVo after that. I liked TiVo (my unit died). It's a shame that
the two companies didn't stick together. I'm willing to see what DTV
rolls out. I'll bet it won't be as good as TiVo though. Neither are as
good as UltimateTV though. The best DVR UI so far.
Here's to the future! |

Unless, of course, DirecTV has software that checks for that sort of
thing. This whole switch of DVRs is all about control (the fee they pay
TiVo is peanuts compared to what they are getting), so I wouldn't be
surprised if they lock it down hard.
The VOD thing still gets me, though. The reason it is attractive for cable
companies is that users with standard boxes can have VOD, and standard
boxes are cheap compared to DVRs, especially when support is factored in.
If DirecTV wants to compete with cable companies on VOD, they need it on
every box. Without some high-speed back connection, the only way DirecTV
can do this is their pseudo-VOD on the DVR. So, why not just eliminate
standard receivers and give everyone who requests a new receiver this new
DVR? If you don't pay the DVR fee, you only get the VOD features, not the
DVR features.
I suspect that DirecTV doesn't have enough faith in the software on the
DVR to risk having so many of their customers complaining.
