He's willing to trade me the receiver for the k's in order to fix his
100's...until he can find OEM woofs to replace the ones he blew way
back. After that, he's gonna put the JBLs in his bass guitar cabinet.

K120 is a midrange unit, he will risk tearing them if he uses them for
bass, unless of course he wants to use them as "high range" units in a
two-way with an 18".

When I was involved in using them in PA our design was to cross them at
250 Hz 12 dB pr. octave in a 4-way system or to use them in fairly small
closed box type stage monitors, ie. with a similar excursion protection
even if not highpassed. If I were to spec them for anything today my
spec would be that they should be used with a 120 Hz 12 dB/octave
highpass if used at high power.

Guitar use with reduced assumed powerhandling - see my JBL brochure on
http://www.jblheritage.org - is OK, full range bass guitar use is most
definitely in contravention of JBL application note for the K120.

Your L-65 Jubals are worth quite a bit of money, as long as they are in good
shape and intact. I remember them quite well when they first came out, and
can still hold their own, espaecially with that great tweeter they have. To
be honest though, I would of bet a paycheck they were 12" woofers, same as
the Century L-100's. I personally would get them reconed, but I doubt you
would notice any difference between JBL and non-JBL materials. They are
replacing the foam and paper, not the voice coil or magnet assembly. I have
a local audio compnay do my older jbl's, and it cost me less than $100 for
both. Do some web searching, as it is a popular repair, and you should find
a comfortable price.

I have a pair of JBL L-65's , a 20 year old 3-way speaker. Boy,
these were nice speakers when I first bought them !!

The woofers are 10 inch designs, and both need reconing. The cost ,
with
associated shipping, will be in the $450 range for the pair.

I am wondering if my investment would be in the right direction. I know
that speaker technology has advanced a lot in 20 years, and that dollar
for
dollar, I would assume that you get more with current purchases.

How much more than the $450 would I have to spend to get something as good
or better in today's market, and what recommendation of speakers would you
suggest ?

I would be interested in receiving any comments.

Thanks !!

This just got me thinking about when I first started buying speakers back in
the 70's. You mentioned "good" speakers from companies like Sansui and
Pioneer? Don't make me laugh. Back in them days I would not touch a
Japanese speaker with a ten foot ... speaker wire. Back then the standard
bearer was the JBL 4311 control room monitor, which I owned. Loved those
speakers. They went well with my Son of Ampzilla. One day a friend, who
had just bought a fancy looking pair of, I think it was Pioneer speakers
with LED lights on them, wanted me to test them out. They were supposed to
be rated at 200 watts rms. I had the red lights on continuously with only
about 4 watts from the Son of A. So much for Japanese speaker technology.
Oh, and they sounded like crap too.

As you know, I have had interest, as I'm another JBL "Brother" of yours.

Back in what I call "the heyday of audio", back in the 'late '60's-late
'70's. lots of great equipment was being made. So many nice speakers
systems were being made by Sansui, Marantz, Pioneer, Advent, JBL, KEF,
Altec Lansing, etc, etc. (Except Bose! I always thought they were crap,
and they still are!)

For a period, much was made in the US, and then onto Japan, and the
Japanese did quite a wondeful job with the Vintage gear.
(Marantz-Sansui-Harman Kardon, etc etc)

Now most average consumer gear is being made in China, and Mexico, and
as you know, most of this gear sucks big time. Yes, there's still very
good equipment still being made, and you'll pay for it too!

If money were no object, I'd probably own a pair of Mark Levinson #33's,
or a Krell FPB650, and driving a pair of something like top of the line
Dynaudio Monitors. lol Mark

Well, the Yamaha NS-1000, the Onkyo Monitor 100 as well a at least a dozen
other models were - and still are - excellent.
