I have some vhs tapes that had copies of older movies on them When I
tried to copy some to dvd, a message appears saying that they are copy
protected and my recorder will not copy them. Does anyone know what
protection is on them and any way to bypass it. Some of these have
never been released to dvd. Any help will be appreciated.

You don't say how you're trying to copy them - whether you're using a
computer or a free standing DVD recorder. If it's the latter you need to put
a video enhancer like the Sima - 200 (now better known as the GoDVD CT 200)
in the video line in. For the computer, the Canopus ADVC 100 automatically
removes copy protection. Regards, Denzil.

Why not the CT 100?

=====================

Because the lower end less expensive enhancers work against first generation
"Macrovision" only. To broaden your spectrum to include "Macrovison 2" you
need the 200. But, since our inquirer says he has OLD movies on tape you are
probably right and the CT 100 will do. As an aside, look out for modern (in
the last few months) copy protection, we don't have anything effective
commercially against it ... yet. Thanks for the heads up. Denzil.

If VHS is essentially dead, why go to the trouble of copy protecting
VHS tapes?

Ever try copying a copy-protected DVD? Denzil.

Gentlemen: The movies were previously processed with a sima copyguard
eliminator. I'm trying to transfer them to dvd. What copyguard is still
there? Macrovision2?

It could be MV level 2, and/or CGMS....depending on which SIMA device you
used, it would not remove that stuff. You need one of the better SIMA
boxes, like the SCC2 Pro or similar...

Some DVDRs allow a copy of a macrovision-protected movie to DVD with
my DVDR. It would appear that the VHS copy removed the macrovision
protection enough so the DVDR can't detect it.

On the other hand I have seen a DVDR refuse to copy a VHS copy - the
same VHS copy that the other DVDR would copy.

IOW it all depends on the VHS tape and the DVDR unit. So don't give up
- try other DVDRs.

There are also "video signal enhancers" on the market that remove the
macrovision sync spoofing. I have one I paid $10 for new in about 1995.
Most of them on the market today seem to have a lot more features than
mine, with a comparably higher price tag. If you shop around, you might
still be able to find a simple one designed for dubbing copy protected
VHS tapes.

Can you tell us some of the models and where to acquire one.

I have heard of Sima and I believe some are being sold on Ebay.

Not really. I haven't been in the market for one for a decade now, and
have no idea what is on the market. I'm only going to transfer a few
VHS tapes to DVD, and the equipment I have seems to work fine. Now that
I have an 8' diagonal HD screen, VHS resolution is just not good enough,
and copying it to a DVD doesn't improve it any.
