TiVo Anywhere becomes dvrEverywhere |

seems TiVo are no longer quite as embracing of their active
extend-the-product community as they once were, so Orb has renamed TiVo
Anywhere "dvrEverywhere"
anyone bringing a VHS to the TiVo "VCR is dead" thing at Digital Life
this week?

Do you mean that Tivo asked them to change the name, or that they're
upset about the product itself?
Brand names used generically has historically been a touchy issue. At
first companies love it because it's essentially free advertising.
Instead of folks saying they want to "record a TV show", the fact that
they want to "Tivo a show" gets the brand around, at least at first.
But after a while people start forgetting that Tivo is a brand, and it
loses it's value. Just look at "Kleenex". When someone offers you a
Kleenex, does it even cross your mind that Kleenex is a brand? Or do
you automatically think of facial tissue in a generic sense?
What's happening is that Tivo is probably starting to realize that they
need to limit the generic use of their name, at least in the media,
before it loses its advertising value. This doesn't really stifle
innovation, they're not shutting down any API's or anything, just trying
to stay distinctive. I really don't blame them. Though in this case it
is a bit odd, since the application is *specific* to Tivo, and not
applicable to DVR's in general.

And no, pulling it out of your rear does not count.
