RCA F38310 and HiDef Tivo |
|
|
I have an RCA F38310, with built-in HDTV. Until today, I had a DirecTivo
hooked up to video1. This afternoon I replaced the standard def Tivo with a
hidef DirecTivo (connections are unchanged). When I try to watch in 1080i
format, I get no picture. I am trying to figure out why I cannot see hidef
video, but do see 480i. I am theorizing that I need to hook up my hidef Tivo
to the component video input of my television. This TV has only one set of
component video inputs, and I currently have my DVD player hooked up to
component video.
Query: if I remove my DVD player, and instead hook up my hidef DirecTivo to
component video, will I get the 1080i signal? Is there a better way of
hooking up my new hidef Tivo so that I can watch my recorded shows in HDTV
format?

Composite or S-video cabling will not support un-downsampled HDTV
signals above 480i (see
http://www.bluejeanscable.com/articles/hdtv-cables.htm), so that's
likely your problem. Component cables are probably the most common HDTV
cable used, though DVI and HDMI cabling is becoming more common.
Most TV's available now offer 2 or more Component inputs, your situation
is unusual. However, if you use a relatively modern A-V receiver, you
can use the receiver as a Component switching device, which is how they
are designed to be used. I use a Yamaha RX-V2500 model
(http://www.yamaha.com/yec/products/receivers/RXV2500.htm#) which
provides 3 component inputs and 1 output (as well as numerous composite
and s-video inputs) which has worked extremely well, though it may be a
bit expensive for some (ebay's a wonderful thing!).
There's probably some relatively inexpensive component switches out
there. I *think* this will do it, though they don't list the
connections:
http://www.radioshack.com/product.asp?catalog%5Fname=CTLG&product%5Fid=15-1927#
In fact it better do it, if not then listing "HDTV receiver" on it is
deceptive.

Yes.

Nope, there's no other input on the F38310 that accepts HD.
I have the same set, and use a component video switchbox to connect the
HD DirecTiVo, HTPC, DVD player, and Roku PhotoBridge to the single
component video input.

I could do that, or alternatively, I could switch my DVD player to another
input, since I seldom use it, and utilize the component video input for the
HD DirecTivo. I'd rather give up some video quality on a component I seldom
use, rather than sacrificing HD quality. What really concerned me was the
availability of HDTV from the component video input. I have a Sony
television, model KP61-HS10, that has two component video inputs, but only
one of those inputs is compatible with 1080i. From your comment, I gather
that single component video input on the F38310 is suitable for a 1080i
signal. Is that correct? |

That's a good thought. This system is in my bedroom, and I don't currently
have a sound system. I think I will look around for an inexpensive receiver
with at least two component video inputs, thus solving both my switching and
sound issues. I am accustomed to receiver video switching. In my main
system, I use my Denon AVR-5800 to which my other HD DirecTivo, a Sony DVD
changer, and a HP Z545 HTPC. |

Yes. The component input on the F38310 accepts 480i, 480p, and 1080i. It
does *not* accept 720p, so you'll have to instruct the HD DirecTiVo that
this isn't one of the output modes you want to enable.

With the latest beta OS software and a couple of free third party apps...I
love it. It's my #1 way to watch recorded HDTV. It's very easy to
navigate for non-tech people, unlike most HTPC setups.
The music playback is good, but I still like the J. River Media Center
interface (on the PC) a lot better, so I stick with that most of the time,
although HexRadio on the Roku is a great player for Internet audio streams.
Also, there's nothing better for viewing photos from a digital camera,
since you get full HD resolution instead of the 720x480 most cameras have
for output.
