my problem is that i've got an avi file 350mb in size, what i want to
do is compress the file to about 150-200mb. I can live with the quality
loss. Can anyone recommend a program to do this? and or any tips.

The easiest program to use is Dr Divx. It is no longer supported by the company that introduced it,
but I believe it will soon be going open source.

Auto Gordian Knot is very easy to use. http://www.autogk.me.uk/

Try VirtualDub with DIVX and you can change the bit rate settings to
achieve a smaller file size. This is probably one of the simplest
programs to use and its free.
