I am trying to install a 10in. infinity sub in my car. My lanzer head
unit has a rca sub line out. I purchased a mono to stereo plug and
then ran the rca line directly to the sub, no sound. Do I need an amp
to run this sub, even though there is a line out from my head unit? If
so, do I plug the sub line out into the amp, then from the amp to the
sub? If not, what am I doing wrong? Thanks

That sub out has to go to an amp, then the amp goes to the sub

New question: What is the difference between a powered and non-powered
subwoofer. I have an infinity 1032w dual voice coil, but it says
nothing about or no power. I presume I do not have a powered sub. If
I had one, would I be able to run it without an amp?

A powered sub is merely a sub with an amp built into the box. The bottom
line is that you need an amp. Since you've already got a sub, it'd probably
be your best option to simply buy an amp to go along with it.

Additional: *all* speakers require amplifiers. In most systems
(including yours), the main speakers are powered by an amp built into
the head unit. Such amps do not typically provide enough power to run a
sub, so they only output a low-level signal (line out) in order to feed
an external amp.

As MZ said, you always need an amp to run a sub - it's just a question
of whether they amp and sub are packaged together ("powered sub") or
separately.
