6DJ8's marked Hickok - Who Made them? |
|
|
I have a bag of 6DJ8's that are marked Hickok that were used in one of
their scopes.
They are made in the USA. Question is who made them? The number codes on
the side do not match up with my EIA tube decoder.
The three numbers on one side of the tube are
36
11
23
and the letters "JCJ"
Thanks,
Dave

Actually they do Dave, just read down - not across.
The first number is 312 - Sylvania!

Dave,
I was thinking about buying some 6JH8's! Are you selling these, and if
so, how much?
Thanks,
Phil

Yep. Sylvania.
They were the OEM supplier for many companies, including Zenith and
Crosley amongst others. RCA, Philco, Tung-Sol, Arcturus, GE and
Sylvania were about the only major makers for the general market.
Western Electric was forbidden to make tubes for other than their own
equipment, and most of the other "Names" relabeled tubes made by the
"big five" (Arcturus dropped out pretty early in the game).
Interesting notes:
Many (not all) RCA 12AX7s are rebranded Telefunkens (check the molded
<> on the bottom). True of many of their 9-pin miniatures, BTW.
A few tubes are more-or-less made by only one company, and all other
sellers rebranded that tube with their own name and logo. The 1L6, for
example was made only by Sylvania. Some 90% of all US-based 7199 tubes
were also made by Sylvania.
And as tube makers started dropping off in the 60s/70s, those that did
remain bought out the stocks of the closed makers, rebranding about
everything. During the latter stages, 2/3 of RCA's offerings were
rebrands.
But you all knew this anyway.
