The D* MPEG4 receiver rollout has begun. Detroit is the first of the
12 big markets and is just beginning to get online now with the others
to follow very shortly.
There are several scenarios to upgrade to MPEG4.
Buy the H20 receviver at a local store (available in Detroit
now...elsewhere soon) and schedule D* to install the new 5-LNB dish
that goes with it.
Call D* directly (if you are in Detroit, other markets next month and
into '06). They will sell you (or swap out the old receiver I have
been told) a new receiver. I am paying essentially $200 and getting it
back via rebate. Scheduled to have it upgraded tomorrow. |

In my area, HD channels are free with any digital cable package. I pay no
more than the guy next door who doesn't know what HDTV is. I couldn't
imagine paying hundreds of dollars just to get the same thing with
DirectTV. |

DirecTv customer. I know, I've been there, done that.

P.S. My HDTV receiver with TiVo is free after rebate (HR10-250),
and I saw all the World Series on Fox 5 from NYC in HDTV. |

Ah, but you don't need to pay for "digital cable" to get OTA HD channels
from the cable company. If you pay for cable, you pay for locals, and
this includes HD locals according to the FCC. Thus, those digital
channels must be free of any extra charges (e.g., no "digital tier",
no "digital box rental fee") and unscrambled (to allow a digital cable
tuner to receiver them so you don't need a cable box).
Even with this, though, I wouldn't go back to rip-off cable for anything.

If they do, they are breaking the law. Locally, many cable companies have
said "you must pay for digital cable to get HD locals" until the customer
pointed out the error of that statement. There are people around here who
pay for "lifeline" cable at less than $10/month and get their HD locals,
because the law says they are supposed to.

Huh? I just checked into getting the dish, and they want to charge me $4.99
a month for their DVR box. Do you mena they should not be doing that? |

They probably want to charge you $4.99 per month for the programming
service. That would be about $8 a month less than a Tivo subscription. |
