Directv HDTV Upgrade |
|
|
Hi,
We are soon planning on putting away our old tv and upgrading to
plasma. We are currently using a Sony Directv reciever where the new tv
will go, and were wondering what is the best upgrade path to HDTV.
Reading on the internet, if I understood correctly, currently there are
HD Directv sets which are required for HDTV. In addition, a new dish
needs to be placed. However, I also read that Directv will start using
MPEG4 for recieving local stations, thus, the current HDTV directv
recievers will be out-of-date.
1) When will the MPEG-4 Directv recievers be available, and what are
the estimated costs (without TiVO). Will this also require a new
satellite antenna?
2) There is general speculation that Directv will offer free HDTV
upgrade. Is there any more information regarding this? Paying 500-700
USD on top of the new tv seems to be steep, considering that cable
operator provides a free box and no addtional hardware is necessary. We
had Directv for 5 years.
3) In regard to Directv only, we have two boxes in our house, and pay
$5 per additonal reciver. Once we get the HDTV plasma, we will put the
old tv in another room and would like to have 3 boxes. Paying $5 per
month per additional TV seems like a waste of money. With the cable TV,
we could just plug in the wire and use the regular tuner to tune to
non-encrypted channels, which are fine for secondary tvs. Is there a
way around this $5? We just need basic channels in the bedroom
4) The HDTV plasma set will come with one connector of each type (svhs,
composite, component) We plan on plugging in the dvd player with the
component type cable. I hear that Directv recievers may use the DVI
style digital link which is now used by new graphics cards. In
addition, this seems to be the best transfer in terms of quality. What
is the likely hood the new HDTV mpeg4 recievers having this connection?
5) What is the timeframe for any of the above, as we would like to know
before buying the actual set when it will be the right time to buy.
many thanks for the responses.
kind regards,
george

For years to come current models will still receive all the HDTV
channels they do now.
If you call DirecTv and ask for retention, they are giving customers in
good standing an HR10-250 for $299.99 with an available $100 rebate if
you commit for 2 years. They will want to charge you $50 for new
antenna. Tell them you want it for free, and maybe you'll get the $50
taken off. In some cases they also give credits on your account and free
programming for 6 months.

If you already have an HD receiver eventually they'lkl swap you out for
a new MPEG unit (they claim).

Depends if you want separate programming. You could (i do) take the
output of an HR10-250, feed it through an RF converter and run the cable
to the bedroom.

If you buy low cost cables on ebay instead of way over priced Monster
cables, cables are not an issue.
or use the technique described here:

No one knows. Originally the MGEG4 units were to be out mid 2005, now
its late 2005. The DVR MPEG4 units remain 6 months later.

So the logical thing would be to wait until MPEG4 recievers come out
and then see what Directv will offer, and how much they would cost
solo. Without TV, I recokn they should not cost more than 300 USD.
Still, it's a lot considering that equipment fee for a cable operator
would be free. |

FREE, nonsense, you have a monthly rental, and you have higher costs

When you post in an inappropriate newsgroup with wrong information, it
clearly qualifies as a shill for cable.
I for DirecTv 8 years ago, and have never since wondered when I got home
from work "what sort of cable reception will I get today".
In Houston Warner Cable had a single longer outage - 36 hours straight
after being brushed by Rita, than I have had cummulatively in 8 years of
DirecTv. So much for Cable phoney ads about Satellite having weather
problems. I just got an HR10-250 for free from DirecTv,
so where is the story of expensive Satellite Hardware? |

Re: Directv HDTV Upgrade |

I talked to a tech rep from advanced techincal at DTV this morning
while bringing my HR10-250 up and running. I asked him about the MPEG4
situation and he said that there will be a software upgrade from the
satellite in the near future and that they had been brought up to
speed on this from corporate HQ. The real issue is what happens to
TIVO after 12/31/07. The new units will have a DTV DVR that is not
TIVO. DTV is committed to support TIVO units until the end of 2007.
The tech said that there are over a million TIVO units out there and
he cannot believe that DTV will start asking for money to upgrade to a
new DVR. Too many customers will just head for the Local Cable
corral. BTW the unit works beautifully and I can't wait for the
dealer to deliver and hook up the HDTV I bought.

In southeast texas area of Beaumont and Pt. Arthur where Rita's eye
came on shore, I am watching Dishnetwork and most of the trailer park
is without TIme Warner Cable. They have been out since the storm hit
on September 24,2005. I went a couple of days without Dish when I came
back home on October 3, 2005. The hurricane crushed my dish. I got
tired of no tv after the lights came back and on Saturday the 8th I
went looking through the abandoned trailer park till I found a good
dish that was not being used since the cables were cut. I traded my
crushed dish for the good dish and put it back on my pole out back of
my house and boom Satellite tv. Today on the 11 th, I had my dish
service appointment and got a new side dish installed for 61.5 and
moved the other dish to 2 new poles I put in and now I have Voom back.
My sister is still waiting for Time warner to come out and fix their
cable. THey have 2 little kids who love kiddie tv and they are going
nuts. Yeah , Satellite tv has gone out a couple of times due to
extreme thunder storms in the past and it lasted about 10 minutes max
till the rain settled back down. Can't say the same for cable. I
suffer from very little rain fade and with a hd dvr there is always
something to watch including my o.t.a. stations when it does rain.
