DirecTiVo not responding to remote |
|
|
Last night I was watching live TV with my DirecTivo. I
switched to a particular channel using the guide and watched
few minutes. I then hit the guide button to see what else
was on. Nothing happened - the current show continued to
play. The green LED on the TiVo flickered to yellow every
time I pressed a remote button, so it was seeing the remote
control commands - it just didn't respond. No "BONK!" no
"BING!", no onscreen display.
Rebooting by unplugging it solved the problem. Is this a
common problem? Is there a known cause? Power-cycling
the unit has solved a number of problems I've encountered,
but it's always a little unnerving to do that to a computer
based product.

I've seen it once or twice in five years. In my case, the DTiVo had
forgotten all my Favorite Channels and turned on all the Channels I
Receive. Since I was still set up for Favorite Channels, the unit
couldn't change channels when I used CH UP or CH DN on the remote. The
Guide claimed that Favorite Channels hadn't been set up. (I could dial
channels directly by entering the number.)
The fix was to go to Preferences and re-check the Favorite Channels I
wanted.
I don't know what caused the problem. |

only seen this with a hacked tivo. there are hacks known
to cause this problem, but if you're not hacked, then
no idea.

Hmmm. After rebooting, I still had my favorite channels, so I
don't think that was the problem. My DTivo is not hacked - just
have a second large drive added. This has only happened once
in almost 2 years of use, so I can't complain.

Just replaced the batteries a week or so ago. It's a
Home Theatre Master remote - not the TiVo peanut. And
since the TiVo was "seeing" the commands, I don't think
weak batteries were the culprit. Some remote control
handling routine probably crashed in the OS and the
reboot brought it back up.

I have seen something similar when I was sitting on another IR source
(another remote or whatever) that was interfing with the signal.
When I got up to mess with the tivo I stopped the buttocks
transmission.

No, the yellow light just means it saw an IR signal. It flashes yellow to
all IR signals it sees, even those not meant for the TiVo (like raising or
lowering the volume on your TV/stereo). |

Just to clarify, what I wrote above is in regards to the yellow light
meaning CPU busy. It is also yellow during a download, but that is minimal
CPU usage. Once the light turns off (download over), then the CPU usage
goes up as it processes the data it just downloaded. |
