Hi anyone suggest a UK dealer who can actually have a sensible discussion
and quote/supply a full blown FCP system?
Really having trouble finding anyone to actually take our money.
Needs to be a dealer with video experience rather than just an authorised
Mac dealership.
Have approached a few but they don't seem to be able to actual get back to
us with prices.

Try Tom Barnacle at Altered Images - He's helped me out with kit many times
and is honest and reliable. His direct number is 07921 660904 or you can
call him at Altered Images direct - their number is on their webiste at
http://www.alteredimagesltd.com/ .

Hope that helps.

Out of interest, what's your definition of "full-blown" in this context?

Are they supplying player/recorder too, and processing add-ons? Also
what performance (rendering speed) are you expecting?

Some of it is how long you want your piece of string...

I need the ability to work uncompressed HD-SDI in and out. Enought storage
for 90 min programme plus render space.
Reliable and stable.
Have all the off board stuff already (have a full blown DS suite)
So have decks plus monitoring.
I want the system to be fast with minimal rendering.

Seems fairly simple.

You have one machine choice.
Add a SATA Raid
Use the Decklink Card.

You could have the Kona LH for HD-SDI, SDI, Component and Composite I/O
as well as Analogue and AES audio. This will also down-convert r/t

The Kona 2 does have 4:4:4 and can real-time up-convert as well but
doesn't have the Analogue I/O like the LH.

Don't go SATA raid. Go for a 4Gbit Fibre Huge Array.

I was going to say that!

Or at least, if you want performance, consider the bandwidth at every
point & look for bottlenecks. SATA isn't all that fast really, and bogs
down with bi-directional traffic (as they all do). So you need one
(physical) disk per channel for decent throughput.

A proper fibre array is indeed the way to go.

Will look at storage carefully.
Our DS has SCSI 24way stripes and is very fast.
Our Adrenaline HD currently has an 8 way SATA stripe which gives good
through put but can be flakey.
Need the FCP solution to be fast and robust. You get what you pay for I
find.

I heard that dealers were having supply problems because Apple themselves[/quote]
have been having supply problems with Powermacs.

Also the rumour is Dual-core macs with PCIE to be announced tomorrow. Might
spring an interesting surprise....maybe....

That's pretty much what I'd expect. SATA is a cost-reducing technology
not a performance-driven one, unlike Wide Ultra-3 SCSI and FC.

Wide Ultra-3 SCSI will give you the best performance, as long as you
stick to 2 devices per bus, max., keep cables short, don't use *any*
t-junctions or removable caddies as these will have a big impact on
performance (but SCA disks are OK, as the connector is designed for the
purpose). If you are offered anything other than a big-mane branded
array, look carefully at the mechanical design and data cable layouts
inside.

Fibre is potentially better, but probably an order of magnitude more
expensive.

Simonm.

jhonathan smiles, at digital safari seems to know everything there is
to know about HD FCP systems, (they dont do anything else) and provide
excelent support, that includes chasing aple for bug fixes. with quite
a degree of sucess.
