Speaker recommendations? |
|
|
Hi all,
Looking for one pair of speakers, and hoping for some recommendations.
Basic outline of requirements:
* For use as PA for DJ/Disco/Corporate/Small Band sound reinforecement
operating as mid-tops.
* Preferable to supply decent upper bass when not using subs (Small hall and
tight space use)
Current (Gemini brand) subs work well enough up to about 150Hz but will be
replaced within 6 months.
* Average venue will be function suites at hotels, so 15m x 25m x 5m would
be a sensible idea.
* To be powered by C-Audio 3001 power amps
(http://www.gbaudio.co.uk/data/ra3001.htm)
Budget around £750-1000 so is quite tight. Timescale around 1-3 months.
Clean used equipment would be considered if you have yours for sale!
Mackie SRM350/450, DB Audio Opera, JBL are thoughts.
Any suggestions?

Stop having those thoughts. Buy some Turbosound TQ310s. Stop thinking.
You'll want a crossover too, get a drivera^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H behringer dcx
2496.
And when you retire the subs I'm sure you'll find something in the Turbo TXD
range that'll fit in your van.

the turbo is good solid value and should be easy to source over on your

You could listen to some Martin F12s. They should be within the budget.

I've got a pair of them as well - bit more forward sounding than the turbos
but not as good all round, also somewhat larger.

Would a pair of new TQ310s would be more than the OP's budget? He did say
about used gear though.

Budget was 750-1000 quid, IIRC they're about 500 each with the right amount
of smiling, haggling and waving of crisp £20 notes. It would be right at the
top of the budget, but still less than the equivalent Nexos...

I heard a pair of Turbosound 12" (don't remember the model) that I would
have bought if I could have afforded them at the time.. hard to justify
since I don't supply the PA when I play out most of the time.
I also thought the Mackie 450's were decent sounding in the price range,
not as good as the Turbos though. A friend has a set of the Mackie
three ways that much better, sr1530 I believe. It's nice having the mid
driver, it seems to really help the vocals. They're probably too big
for the the guy's needs though.
I'm curious what people here think of the B-52 line... they have some
smaller sattelite and sub combos that look like they're a decent value,
but I don't know how they sound. I'm sure others here can vouch either
way. |

Hi all,
Back to the top of the thread about me needing new speakers.
I do like the idea of the Turbosound TQ310 and did shortlist these
previously, although the price is a little higher.
One thing that confuses me is that the manual states....
------------------------------------------------
The TQ-310 must be used with professional
quality digital controllers such as the
Turbosound Loudspeaker Management
Systems, providing at least five parametric EQ
points per output, and output limiting
functions..
------------------------------------------------
What exactly does this unit do? Is it "just" an electronic crossover,
which I already have?
Manufacturers appear to be happy to state you MUST use their controller
which is a bit
out of order if my assessment is correct.
Can anyone clarify this matter regarding the controller?
no, a loudspeaker manager/controller is not just a crossover.
Speaker managers also provide parametric EQs, limiters, delays
Turbosound are saying you should use a speaker manager which has limiters
and at least 5 band parametric EQ. They give their own model as an
example - this unit will probably have the advantages of the settings for
all their turbosound speakers already preset. They give it as an
example,
they do not say that you have to use theirs. Personally I would
recommend
the behringer DCX2496
I wondered about this before. Would you be able to get "settings" for the
DCX from Behringer or Turbosound for the TQ-310s or would you have to
experiment yourself?
[/quote]
I am not sure whether you would be able to get EQ,limiter, delay settings
from Turbo for if you are using a 3rd party speaker processor, but it may be
possible, as they didn't say you needed to use their processor, just needed
to use one. |

If it's the cerwin-vega stuff you are talking about then it is best avoided.
Haven't had much experience with it myself, mostly through choice, but when
I've had to use it I was not impressed.

I don't know if it's a rebadged CV or not... the brand is B52, I see
them at the usual guitar mart kinda places. |

In the rack we're upgrading we have an older American DJ unit. It's not the |
best but it works well and hasn't let us down in over 2 years.

I could live with doing this if I could get the recommended modelling
details to
allow me to set it up. I've just sent TS an email, yesterday, asking for
some information
but I will be surprised if I see any. I really like the idea of these
cabinets but using their
controller would kill the budget. I know I will need something, but I would
prefer a choice
of controller as it could be used with other gear too.
