[quote]The BBC decision has had the Avid forum up in arms! How dare they shun Avid
'cause Avid is the God damn market leader they cry! Well, saving £18M a
year in production costs in one department alone by using FCP+Kona2+Sony Z1
cameras has got my vote!
I am glad the BBC has broken the shackles of the boutique Avid facilities in
Soho and are delivering us license payers better value for money.
One of the programmes on BBC2 call Full on Food already has used the FCP/Z1
during production and there was no way that anyone could tell such
affordable tools were being used. The Z1 picture quality in DVCAM mode is
obviously as good as the DSR 570.
If I was a facility owner in Soho or a camera operator/owner with Digibeta
or DSR 570 I'd be shitting myself.

Right now specs the old codgers are in deep denial, (I'm entitled to say
so 'coz I'm an old codger too) droning on about latitude and the fact
that their lenses cost three times the price of a Z1. Meanwhile others
are just getting on with making programmes that might look 2% less than
the megabuck brigade to those nerdy enough to spot the difference, but
at 25% less cost. Having said that the Z1 when used to its full HD
potential needs no debate as to it's comparisons with any SD camera.
The improved production ergonomics of having everything needed for a
production in house, including the new breed of multitasking crafts
people who discredit the Ludites cry that craft skills are in decline,
something that is proving to be a myth. Good grief there's at least as
much poor craftwork revealed in the TV of the 70, 80's and 90's as there
is today. Reminds of 30 years ago when they swore blind that by now
you'd never be able to get your roof re-thatched or have a dry stone
wall built, that was also a myth perpetrated by the vested interest
groups.

Exactly John. Cream will be able to float to the top irrespective of
whether one can afford the so called "industry standards."
I learnt a lot researching the work of the great Iranian director Abbas
Kiarostami. I used to aspire to the industry elite but after learning what
truly matters by watching Kiarostami's work my values have changed for the
better. He now favours cheap and cheerful DV cameras and proves genius will
shine through on any media.
In my last post it may have looked like I was sneering at the Avid facility
and Digibeta owners owners. I should clarify that I was sneering at the
elitism that I have found in the media business and that new technology has
levelled the playing field even more than the days of DV. I have often
found a closed shop unless one own the right equipment. No longer!!!!
