I'm about to buy the first of two Final Cut Pro NLEs for an access
studio. My Board and I feel that FCP is the best option, as it offers a
lot of power for the price and is the defacto NLE standard at this
level.

We plan on buying a G5 dual 2.7 ghz, 512mb DDR400 SDRAM, 250gb serial
ATA-7200rpm ATI Raedon 9650 w256mb DDR SDRAM, 1gb DDR400 SDRAM upgrade,
16x double layer drive, keys, mouse, 20" monitor, OSX.

Final Cut Studio (FCP5, DVD Studio Pro 4, Motion 2, Soundtrack Pro)and
a few peripherals. Board says I'm good up to about $7500.

Am I on the right track here?

A friend uses almost the same system for weddings and says he has
problems, and has switched back to an earlier system. What say you?

Listen to your friend. He probably experiences problems from OS upgrades
etc.. Check out the forums thoroughly before buying. Try and find out what
problems others are having. FCP is quirky. I would pass on it. Others
differ.

Are you following the transition Apple is making from their current

PowerPC platform to Intel? I understand the power-user machines will be
replaced later than the consumer iMacs. How will you feel two or three
years down the road knowing that your machine is a dinosaur and not
upgradeable?

My advice would be to go with Adobe's suite of video products on an
Intel platform. Put the extra money in the bank and if you're still not
sold on Premiere go for the Apple.

I use Premiere Pro 1.5 and it's rock solid.

I use FCP at work and Premiere Pro at home, which IMO is the better of
the two.

I have both Mac G5 FCP Studio HD and also a PC with Sony's Vegas 6 + DVD
Suite. I think the Mac with FCP has more features, but the PC with Vegas is
far less expensive and very competent.

Around here in the community colleges, the FCP classes are always full,
not so much the other software packages. At our local FCP users group,
we're getting a surprising number of users from the local government
shops (including public utilities, city government, etc) ALL seem to be
switching to FCP.

I suspect you'll be very safe with your choice.

But by all means call around your community and find out what the
serious players are using. Particularly the folks who are "downsizing"
from the previsous generations needlessly expensive AVID systems, etc.

Good luck.

I recently went the G5 and Final Cut route after a lot of thought. But I am
a cheapskate so needed to make some concessions to ease my conscience over
parting with all that money!<g>

I bought a refurbished G5 Powermac from Apple which saved me quite a bit. I
also bought the Formac monitor instead of the Apple monitor. So far as I
can see, the only think that has been tampered with in the G5 is one CD
sleeve has been opened! The sales guy said many "refurbished" macs have
never been out of the box and are just returned because the purchaser
changed his mind. But they won't sell them as new. They carry the same
guarantees, etc.

I also purchased a full retail unopened copy of Final Cut Pro 4 off Ebay at
about half the normal retail price.

I am still learning about both so can't comment further, except to say the
Mac is beautifully built which alone is reassuring. I bought a PC for the
office about the same time from PCWorld and politeness prohihits me from
commenting! Let's say it is comparing a Rolls Royce with a Ford Escort --
both do the same job but there are a lot more spares and add ons available
for the Ford - but I still know which I'd choose, if I had the money!

Ditto here. We have an FCP system which couldn't even get through simple
projects without nightmares. Apples QC on their hardware/software is very
poor.. note the thousands who had to have their screens replaced on their
nanopods in a week or two.. and our Mac is on its third mainboard for
failed firewire connections. I did figure out a way to keep it from breaking
again.. simply by NOT turning it on.

Also note that any apple you buy now will be obsolete when the Intel
machines arrive. May as well buy an intel machine now.

Much to the chagrin of the Champaign Palace Post Facility House
industry, the BBC has just set up 60 FCP stations after deciding that
they can finish, grade and audio sweeten much of their production needs.
The lack of expertise and consequent dysfunction suffered by some should
not be taken for a generality. FCP and other technologies, such as HDV
at the moment, require certain specific system and production path
knowledge. Both will let one down if one doesn't have that knowledge.
Consequently the results of inappropriate and incognisant analysis are
meaningless.

Derry,
I respect your opinion and am glad you can share with us but your analogy of
a mac and PC isn't very accurrate
mainly because you classified all PC's as being the same.
How can you compare a $500 e-machine with a $4000 Professionally built PC as
both being equal and then compare that to a mac?

You should have been more specific about the exact brand, model and specs of
the PC you didn't like at work with the mac.
And you siad yourself, you are cheapskate, so i doubt you bought a top of
the line hardware PC. No?

That's the only thing i take issue with in your comments. People often lump
all PC's together when comparing when in reality there are ford escort and
mercedes and Rolls Royce versions of PC's out there for sale.

The BBC decision has had the Avid forum up in arms! How dare they shun Avid
'cause Avid is the God damn market leader they cry! Well, saving £18M a
year in production costs in one department alone by using FCP+Kona2+Sony Z1
cameras has got my vote!

I am glad the BBC has broken the shackles of the boutique Avid facilities in
Soho and are delivering us license payers better value for money.

One of the programmes on BBC2 call Full on Food already has used the FCP/Z1
during production and there was no way that anyone could tell such
affordable tools were being used. The Z1 picture quality in DVCAM mode is
obviously as good as the DSR 570.

If I was a facility owner in Soho or a camera operator/owner with Digibeta
or DSR 570 I'd be shitting myself.

I got em both

2 3gig workstations w/ Premier Pro / Canopus, Vegas 6:
FAST is the word, RT cards makes it happen -- except for Vegas which is the
fastest way to CUT ANYTHING -- once you get the hang of it. Love em ALL

1 Dual 1.8 GHZ G5 w/ FCP Studio:
Sluggish feeling compared to the Intel RT Card Bunch, BUT Forgivable
considering: LIVE TYPE, MOTION2, IDVD and Soundtrack Pro which all JAM
pretty hard too. LOve em too----

I'm hoping that a new Firewire 800 RAID might put some speed in all of the
above's step

You are wasting your money on FW800 on a powermac. Crap motherboard design[/quote]
limits the bandwidth of FW800. A SATA raid solution might be better for
you.
