Sad QUAD ESL-63s |
|
|
Owned some "ESL-57s" once upon a time. Now have option to bid on some
ESL63s that are a bit worse for their age. Evidently cut-out on louder
peaks (not the protections cct doing this) but come back later.
Any suggestions on what to do to recondition ?

Reduced distance between electrostatic grid and membrane due to either
grid buckling because of physical damage or because of loose membrane
come to mind, allow me to suggest asking a service center, if you can
find one, for a guesstimate. There may be a simple fix for tightening a
possibly loose membrane or it may be that their cost should be very low.
Do check that it is not something simple, such as extreme LF in the
input signal.
All of the above constitutes unskilled speculation.
Kind regards

I don't know how you are diagnosing "(not the protections cct doing
this)" without having seen the units. This could be an amplifier
problem, a normal Quad protection action, or a problem with the Quad
protection circuit. I have seen failed protection circuits.
