I need to put about 10 seconds of "Black" at the beginning and end of
my movie and fade in from it and fade out to it. I have the
fadetransition but where do I get the black? Can anyone help me with
this? I suspect it is a simple simon thing to do but I can't find it in
my manual for Pinnacle 9.

It's funny, I've looked for the same thing with no luck!!! I just
cheated and made a 720x480 black frame in Paint.

in other programs you make black video or a color matte that is black.
others you can just fade to no video, and the default is black. Don't
know about Pinnacle NLE.

Adobe Premiere Pro has a "dip to black" function. Added to the
beginning of a clip, it fades uo from black. Added to the end of a
clip, it fades down to black.

Make it in paint and import it, or roll some tape with the lens cap off
and digitize it. Or take a clip from your bin and pull it's video level
all the way down.

You gotta watch between all these methods, to be consistent with your
setup levels, and try not to mix the methods.

In Pinnacle Studio 9 this is very easy to do. (There are at least three ways
to do it depending on your preference.

1. In Timeline view, double click on the Overlay track,

OR 2. Select Create Title from the Toolbox menu item at the top of screen.

OR 3. Select the Show Titles icon (Third icon down at upper left side of
page)

this will open up the Title editor for you.

Select the Backgrounds icon on the right side of screen. Above this you will
see three colour swatches. The left one is for solid colours. Click on this
and you have the option to select any colour you wish. Choose the Black of
you choice and press OK. You will return to the title editor screen.
Before you click OK to return to the edit window, do yourself a long term
favour and save the background title for future use. Do this by selecting
Save Title from the File menu at top left of screen. (Give it a name that is
meaningful to you - eg. Black or Blank).
In future when you want a blank (Black) start or end just open the titles
icon (left side of screen) and select the one with the name you used to save
you title as and drag it to where you want it on the timeline. The duration
can be adjusted at any time by simply dragging the right hand end of the
title on the timeline.
Enjoy.

I'm sure you got useful answers, but I'd like to point out:

Unless you have some sort of specialized need, ten seconds on video is
FOREVER.

Well one way this tape 10 seconds of video with your lens cap on, and save
it as a clip. LOL
