Zooming in Premiere? Please Help! |
|
|
Hi guys:
I can't figure out how to do this for the life of me, although this
should be quite simple.
I want to zoom-in on one part of a video image that I have in Premiere
and keep it zoomed-in on that spot in the final exported video.
For example: an image of a politician speaking at a rally... I want to
zoom in tightly on his face, blowing that up to full size and cropping
out all of the people standing beside him and the crowd, etc.
I have used the "Motion" option, and that does zoom in, but the image
won't stay still. It wavers all over the place, to the left and right,
up and down.
Is there a way to just do a tight zoom in on one part of the image and
have it stay still? Much appreciation and respect to anyone who can
walk me through this.
BTW, I am using Premiere 6.5

Your approach is good, but there's a catch :-( If you have a shaky footage,
the shake increases when you zoom in. If your subject is moving, you have
another problem (this one can not be solved). To decrease the shake you can
try to use the motion option, not only to zoom in, but also to "center" the
subject. First, zoom in, see where your subject is and by using the "Motion"
option move the subject in aprrox same position on the screen. Of course,
you can't zoom in too tight, you must have enough "operating space". This is
a very boring and time-consuming procedure, because (depending on the
"shakiness") you must aplly motion option to every frame that is out of
"centre". I use it sometimes to remove shake from my footage taken from the
moving car. The results are relatively good, but I do this only if I have
enough time. |

The "Motion" function allows you to change the parameters (zoom,
horizontal and vertical position, rotation, etc.) throughout the duration
of the clip. Simply set the "time slider" to the beginning, set up your
parameters as you like them, and write them down. Then set the
"time slider" to the END of the clip and enter THE SAME VALUES.
Your zoom should be rock-steady throughout the entire clip.
Zoomin in on certain politicians could be scary, and trying to use a
steady framing may be possible only when they are sober. :-) |

For the stabilization part, you're really using the wrong tool. A
compositor would be much more appropriate.

Perhaps you should clarify what you mean by this.
1) You have a "fixed" zoom window but the subject inside
wanders around or in/out of this frame.
2) Your zoom window doesn't stay in the location you want.
Please clarify which one you mean as the solutions are very
different. |

You're absolutely right, my language was ambiguous. Let me be more
specific.
When I have used the Motion option, I've been able to zoom in on a spot
in the video.
However, the Motion option also causes the Zoom window to move all
around in the frame.
In other words, and to return to my theoretical example, the Zoom will
move from the poltician's face down to the podium, over to the right
hand corner of the screen, back to his face, etc.
It doesn't have to do with shaky footage because these are tripod
shots. What I want is to be able to specify a certain part of the
image (say, a 150 x 150 box in the dead-center of the image) and to
never have the Zoom leave that spot until I specify otherwise.
Richard, your advice about the Time Slider sounds as if it would
work... I do remember using that tool when trying to fix Motion but I
could not figure out how to make it stay in one spot. Would your
advice do what I am looking for? I won't be able to work on the
project till the weekend, but any advice I can have going into it would
help greatly.
Thanks very much,
o.k.y. |

Go back and read my original response. The trick is to use
the time silder with only two "keyframes", one at the beginning
of the shot, and one at the end. Then set up you zoom at the
beginning, note all the setting numbers, and go to the end and
enter exactly the same numbers. Do NOT set any key-frames
anywhere else in the timeline of the shot. Your zoom will stay
rock-solid for the length of the shot. |

Thank you very much. I will try your advice re the keyframes as soon
as I have access to the machine again. Nobody else could tell me how
to do this; I knew I could count on the expertise of a wizard like you
at rec.video.production. Much appreciated.

yes.. if you hold the last frame of the zoom. Otherwise you will have to
stabilize it either by hand or with a plugin or AE type conpositor. Note..
they don't work perfectly every time either
