Help, Basic DVD playing Questions |
|
|
Hi,
I just purchase the cheapo iLo DVD recorder(wally world, $150) to
replace my VCR that broke this weekend. I'm using a HP DVD+RW disc.
This is also my first DVD player! All I wanted was the basics.
My questions:
Last night I recored a 2 hour movie. When setting up the player I told
it to put Chapters every 10 minutes. But they're not there, why? Do I
need to finalize the disc before they can be accessed?
If I finalize a disc(RW), do I lose the ability to record on that disc
again?
If I stop a 2-hour movie at the 50 minute mark and turn off the player
and come back in an hour or so, how do I pick up where I left off? Do
I have to fast forward? Do I have to write down at what minute I
stopped viewing the program so I know where to start? This seems worse
than a VCR. When I did stop the program it said, "Marked Stop", does
it actually mark it? I couldn't find out how/where.
I can only set the timer for 5 programs, that's 5 less than my VCR.
Is this because I have a cheap unit or are all DVD recorders like
this?
Cons about the iLo: The buttons and the remote are SMALL. Some about
the size of a grain of rice. I can see the timer button failing before
XMas, but with wallyworlds return policy I'll probably return it by
then, lol. The carton did say, "Lite-On sales and Dist". That looked
like a good sign.
Thanks,

Finalize should not affect this. BTW my Panasonic hard disk recorder also does not automatically create chapters as it is supposed to.

Finalize will prevent you from recording on a DVD+R or DVD-R. I have never tried to finalize a DVD+RW (or with my recorder a DVD RAM). Even if it prevents you from adding to the disk you should still be able to format it and use it again.

It could remember the spot where you stopped when you turn it off, but most players don't. This is the only time a VCR has the advantage.

Given the recording limit of a DVD this sounds reasonable.

I have a LiteOn, same company as the iLO, apparently.
I thought the machine was failing to make the chapter marks too,
until I got the idea of pressing the chapter skip buttons during
playback.
Guess what - it skips to the next or previous chapter (in my case,
the next or previous 15 minute point, since that's what I set).
They're there, they're just invisible.
I didn't try the disk on another player. Maybe I should...
On the other topic, I think if you start to record on pause, it will
continue where you pressed pause, and if you stop record and then
restart, it will create a new title after the first one.
It's an easy experiment to do. We should all do that one too...
Finally, I think you will see that there is no menu entry to
finalize a DVD+RW. It only is valid (and needed) for -R, -RW, and
+R. There is difference in the +RW spec, but I don't know anything
about what or why.
