20 of _anything_, run away, unless they know how to play well together.
(I've heard some accordion performances that would knock anyone's socks
off. Perfectly reasonable instrument. Unfortunately folks like taking
cheap shots at it, which says more about them than it. Which, I suppose,
is on topic for this thread. Sigh.)

I still am...... Its like a nightmare, but I am still awake!.. And this
incident happened 4 years ago..
Luckily I only have one more 1 day festival to go this year, then it'll be
another 9 months before I have anything nasty booked again..

Agreed.. Why not try to help the poor guy solve the problem instead of
deliberately making it worse?
I usually carry a can of contact cleaner in my briefcase.. This helps in
some cases, but if all else fails I'll just stick a mic on the guitar
instead of having to deal with noisy connections etc..

20 accordions! Run away, run away!
Worst part of it all was when I went to set up the PA on thursday night
people had started arriving at the temporary camping area in the field
next
to the festival area.... They already had their caravans set up, so they
had
nothing better to do than play accordions... They were playing when I
arrived and when I left a couple hours later..
Friday: I arrive around 10 am just in time to straighten a few things out,
patch a pile of "floating mics" etc... As soon as I open the car door I
can
hear definate signs of accordion-playing.. Festival starts at noon and
shuts
down for the night around 1 am... I can still hear accordions playing in
the
campgrounds when I leave 1 hour later..
Saturday: Arrive around 9 am.. Can hear accordions from the campgrounds..
Festival starts around 10 am.. goes on till 1 am or so.... Can still hear
accordions when I leave the place an hour later..
Sunday: Arrive around 9 am.. Can hear accordions from the campgrounds..
Festival starts around 10 am.. Festival finally stops around 7 pm or so,
in
time for everyone to pack up their caravan and head home to their life as
retired citizens.. When I leave the area 2½ hours later I can still hear
accordions playing in the camping area...
Add 30 minute band sets w. 5 minute changeovers all day to the above and
you
are seeing my worst nightmare :-) Luckily the backline is setup
permanently
( drums, guitar and bass amps ), so its just the accordions you have to
deal
with..

Have you upset anyone recently? |

Years ago i did a short tour with the then unknown band called Helmet
we were in the south of tiny little holland as the band remembered our
liberal opinion about hash. Sound check came, no band to be found.
looking for them the production maid remembered the stepping into a
cab as well as the company it was from.
a quick call to the cab company learned that the cab driver was very
surprised he had to bring then to "the Bulldog" a well known coffee
shop among americans and probably the only one they had ever learned
of
only the distance between tilburg ( south netherlands) and amsterdam
is about 100 Km and given the dutch traffic a 1.5 hour drive minimum.
A bit stoopid considering there was more than likely a 'coffee' shop around
the corner

What can I say, you're working the wrong festivals. On the other hand,
maybe those are the ones which most need someone good on the board, who
can make a purse out of the sow's ear...

Well.. Atleast the pay is better than the typical rocknroll gig with the

Hm. This has me wondering whether anyone has ever made wind socks in
more complicated shapes... No, on second thought, I don't think I want
to know.
The best practical jokes, as far as I'm concerned, are the ones which
aren't malicious, are only momentarily distracting, and (most
importantly) amuse the audience and (after a doubletake) the performer.
The more malicious stuff may be satisfying if you have a real need for
revenge, but just doesn't strike me as _funny_.

On the Christmas tour i used to be on, there was one stage that was a
renaissance with acoustic wooden flutes that were brought out on a tray.
Well, the main guy would hem and haw them pick one flute. same gag every
night. One stop, i found a small plastic dildo (sized to put on a light
switch) and put it on the tray with the flutes. The flute selection took
a little longer that night. Another night, he did the same and opened up
the sheet music to see a picture of the flute sticking out of someone's
anus. That cracked them up for about 5 minutes. Hard to play it after
seeing that....

OK. I'll see your 1,000 drummers and raise you by another 500 drummers plus
2,500 pipers ... Glagow Green, August 2003, the massed bands at the World
Championships of the Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association. There were approx
220 bands taking part. It might be big but it's certainly not clever.
