DivXtoDVD - can it keep the target size straight? |
|
|
I needed to convert my old DivX for a friend...
Picked up what seems to be popular favorite, DivXtoDVD.
Seems like a wonderful piece of software - simple,
capable, quick - if it only worked!
It does not seem to work for me at all:
Picked old freeware version first (0.5.2). Out of the
1.2 Gb AVI, it made over 5.5 Gb files in total -
way too much for DVD-R. Thought maybe that's freeware
version's problem, went with current downloadable one
(1.99.19). Same thing - setting the size to DVD-5
produced total size of ~ 5.5 Gb. Setting the size to
4000 Mb gave the final size of ~ 5 Gb. All too big to
fit on DVD-R.
Tried limiting max bitrate to 4 mbps - that made
~ 3.7 Gb of files but the quality is *significantly*
inferior.
Just for the heck of it, tried converting short NTSC
clip into PAL. Did not work - the output was still
29.97 fps.
What's going on here? And why I don't see anyone else
complaining about these issues? I will gladly pay for
this software because it does everything I want and
will likely ever need. But I need to make it work
first!!!
Thanks for any hints.

Bitrate directly influences the size of the file. I do not know that SW so I
cannot tell, if you can use some setting to make the file fit at one disc.
But you can set the bitrate... Use bitrate calculator, eg, this one:
http://www.videohelp.com/calc.htm
You enter total playing time, total bitrate for an audio and any extra
space - I use 10MB for every animated menu I create. Use resulting bitrate
for encoding. The file will fit exactly on the disc.
