Recommendations please... |
|
|
I use a Sony combo rig, and surprisingly, it has held up rather well
over these last 18 months (longer than I ever anticipated), but it's
missing one feature that drives me nuts ... an AUTO-OFF.
Yes, this unit does have a power-off option. but it works for the VHS
tape side ONLY, not the DVD.
This doesn't make any sense to me when it should apply to either format
in the same deck, but that's why I'd like to know if there are any DVD
players (or recorders) out there that would allow me to go to sleep to
a title without the rig staying on (and in play mode) the entire night.
I've looked around, but to no avail ... nothing I've found boasts an
auto-off mode, but maybe that's because I've been looking in all the
wrong places?
Thanks in advance.

1. What the heck is going on at your house that makes 18 months seem
like a long life? Don't you normally get at least 5 times that?
2. I have a Pioneer DV-260, a cheapie from Wal-Mart, that shuts off
about 15 minutes after play ends. I find it annoying. What is it about
not having this feature that bugs you?
3. Your post should serve as (yet another) warning to others to stay
away from combo units.
I was going to suggest looking at http://www.videohelp.com/dvdplayers
but I see that they don't include a auto-off feature as a searchable
option.

Asian manufacture dummy -- not user abuse as you likely suspect. These
things are designed to FAIL right out of the box, and when they don't,
it's a miracle. It's also why the CONsumer electronics market has
turned into a literal CRAP-shoot.
I enjoyed a beautiful 20" Sony table-top monitor (with surround sound)
for over 15 years, and when I finally had to replace it last September,
I went through ONE Panasonic and THREE brand new Sony sets before I got
one without a factory flaw, so let's not wallow in any delusions about
this racket.

I used to, but I don't have access to a magic wand to bring back the
past ... that is, one that wasn't Made In China.

Well, knowing where you shop says it all, but apparently your
comprehension skills rate above your pig-headed arrogance. Try reading
my post again to resolve your own confusion. (jeez)

And yours serves as another perfect example of people who can't see the
forest through the trees, and that only fools compare trash with trash.
That means the better advice is to quit making Asia rich and to avoid
retailers like Walmart, but we know it's already way too late for that.
Well, it seems you did anyway. Thank You. |

The link below is for the VCR/DVD Panasonic combo that I have, and it says
it has Auto Off; and I believe I remember finding it had turned off, after I
had forgotten about the music CD I had left in the player... once. :)
Since I haven't played but one VCR tape since I've had it, there's no
confusion about which side shut down. I've only had it 3 months.
Here's the link FWIW, it is NOT a recorder though, only a player:
http://www2.panasonic.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/vModelDetail?storeId=15001&catalogId=13401&itemId=93208&cacheProgram=11002&cachePartner=7000000000000005702&surfModel=PV-D4745K&catGroupId=24995&surfCategory=DVD/VCR%20Combos&displayTab=S
Hope it doesn't line wrap on you. ;)

To make sure I am not misleading you, I decided to find the Panasonic
Instruction Manual [which BTW is the worst organized I have ever seen],
and see what it says... if I could find it.
Unfortunately, the only thing about "Auto-OFF" that I can find quickly is
under "SPECIAL VCR Features". I read somewhere that this manual hasn't been
updated in 4 years [which is easy to believe]... so I don't know what to
tell you. I do know though, that I wasn't using the VCR... when mine shut
down... for whatever reason. :)

LOL... OK... this is the last one talking to myself... I FOUND IT!!!
On the last page of Basic Operations... it says:
"Auto Power Off Functions"
Power turns off after DECK has been in STOP mode [DVD] for about 5 minutes.
Is that what you are looking for?

I did answer the question by suggesting that a presumptuous jerk
re-read my initial post more carefully. I wasn't seeking out your
approval or disdain either, just recommendations on DVD decks with an
Auto-Off feature you couldn't offer.
I hope that's clear enough for you -- so next time, don't respond
without a valid reason, unless you do it just for the cheap thrill of
appearing as you do. |

I can't say for certain BJ, but thanks for looking into it. The problem
is, most DVD's don't just stop when they're through ... they return to
the Menu which means the disc remains in play mode (spinning inside the
deck) until someone pushes the STOP button manually.
I'm in search of a deck that will automatically stop the DVD after a
certain time and shut the deck off simultaneously.
It's possible the Panasonic model you cited does this, but I'd have to
get one here and try it out to know for sure, and that means buying one
blindly.
Who knows, maybe they just don't make them that way, or there isn't
enough consumer demand for it. Perhaps it's a high-end feature on a
recorder ... I'll just have to explore a little further. I figured this
group would be a good place to begin.
You see, I like to fall asleep to an episode of Columbo, or some other
great show I have on DVD. I can set the sleep timer to turn the TV off,
but I really don't like the idea of the disc remaining in play mode all
night long, and that's why the feature is important to me.
I've even considered placing a digital timer at the power source, which
would accomplish the same thing, and it looks like I may end-up doing
that. Until I do, I can only take advantage of the Auto-Off feature on
the SLV-D300P with VHS tapes.
Thanks again. |

I don't share your apparent view that electronic goods manufactured in
Asia are crap. I've had excellent experiences with nearly all of my
purchases of electronic equipment. You're right, though, if you're
only seeing ~18 months from your equipment, then I suspect abuse (or
kids or pets, etc., which some would also place into the abuse
category).

Shop wherever you want. You'll very quickly find that brand name
electronics are available at numerous retail outlets, whether brick
and mortar or online. If you don't like Wal-Mart, shop elsewhere. I
only used it as an example. It's certainly not the only place I shop.

OK, name some other significant locations where popular consumer
electronics are made. Be sure to indicate the volume of such
manufacturers and compare to those in Asia. Unless you can do that,
your statement has no credibility.
